Hello guys,

It was a NBD for me on Friday, yay! The bike came with 32T x-sync 2 SRAM direct mount chainring. To maintain the gearing of the previous bike, I would need 28T chainring.

I can see, that new x-synx 2 chainrings are available from 30T on, but older X-sync chainrings started at 28T. Can I just buy x-sync chainring to replace x-sync 2 chainring? Direct mount should be the same, right? From what I gathered, X-sync was originally for 11s drivetrains, and x-sync 2 is for 12s eagle? Also, I have read, that X-sync 2 is optimized to use more teeth to pull the chain at the same time, so it should last more time?

thank you!

Xsync 2 came out with the 12 speed drivetrain and 50 tooth cog, so 30 was deemed by SRAM to be small enough. I run a 28 ring with a 42 tooth cog which would be equivalent to a 33 (theoretical) ring and 50 cog. There were also issues with the wear on the Xsync 1 11sp rings so SRAM changed the design with the stated intent of improving that. IDK how much of an improvement these are. Mounting is the same.

Anyway, you can get narrow-wide direct mount 12 speed rings smaller than 30T from other manufacturers like Wolftooth, Absolute Black, etc... and these work well.

You're have a 12 speed drivetrain, right? The SRAM steel 28 tooth ring is an 11 speed ring. The inner width of 11 and 12 speed chains is the same so I'm almost certain it will work with a 12 speed chain, though I haven't tried it. The WT and AB rings say they'll work with both.

I run a SRAM 28t steel ring on my 11 speed drivetrain. It's super smooth.

My Kona came with GX Eagle 12spd with a 34T x-sync2. Due to lots of issues with sucking up debris, I recently changed over to 11spd and went with Shimano Der/Shifter. I put on a SRAM GX 11spd cassette (have XD hub), 11spd chain and replaced the 34T x-sync2 chainring with a 30T. Everything shifts great.

I was set on 30T so I was looking at x-sync (steel) vs x-sync2 (alu). If you look closely, the tooth profile is very different on the x-sync2 with kind of a shark tooth angle to the teeth. The x-sync is more of a traditional tooth profile. Supposedly, the x-sync2 is less susceptible to chain drops. I stayed with the x-sync2 because after over 2,500 miles of singletrack I've never had a chain drop.
