Thought I would post my build here. I have just been replacing parts when they break and wear out.
I have had around 3,000 miles on it (my thoughts at the bottom of this post) on the trail and road.

Frame: 2020 Chisel Large
Seatpost: KS E20-I 120mm dropper post w/ Wolf Tooth lever
Fork: Rockshox Judy Gold (increased to 120mm for free)
Cranks: Sram X01 175mm (upgraded after bb died)
Derailleur: SX (ordered an XT which will save 50 grams)
Shifter: SX
Cassette: SX
Chain X01
Tires: Maxxis Ardent Race (front) Maxxis Ikon (Rear). Both 2.35 and MaxxSpeed. I have Cushcore XC front and rear.
Grips: ESI Chunky
Brake pads: Disco Brake Kevlar pads (seriously, they are a steal at only a few dollars a pair. And they work so much better than the stock pads but at a fraction of the price)
Rotors: Shimano RT-66 rear Shimano RT-56 front
Pedals: RaceFace Chesters

Weight: 27.6 pounds

If you bought a Chisel, what should you do? Get a dropper post. It's worth every single penny and gram on a hardtail. Also consider increasing the travel of the Judy fork to 120mm which is free and only takes a few hours (if you aren't familiar with the fork). I think the fork transformed how the bike felt. The extra 20mm of travel is appreciated so much, and I compensated for the slacker seat tube angle by sliding the seat forwards all the way. The increase in stability is insane, and after lowering the bars by 5mm, climbing is virtually the same (because of increased fork sag). The best part? It's free.

My whole build was around 2,500 USD and it does everything very well from technical or smooth trails to even road riding. Not to mention that it has served me well in XC races with my skill and fitness being the limiting factors. Considering that I would happily send hours in the saddle any day, I think it's a purchase that was worth it and I have no intent in replacing it in the next few years.
The Chisel was a much better purchase than my $5,500 Santa Cruz Hightower, but I gotta admit, I sometimes wish that I had full suspension when riding the Chisel.

I can only imagine the 2021 Chisel is even better.

***These pictures are with a 100mm fork. IMO, the bike looks much better with a 120mm fork

What are the steps for the free increase of the Judy fork to 120mm? Is there a link to instructions you can provide?

Pull the spacer out of the air side, I did with the 200hr fork service, look on youtube. I'm 200lbs and I do feel on steeper down hill some fork flexion(real or imagined). I'm thinking about the fox 34 sc or a rockshock alternative.

hey, have a 2020 specialized chisel, did 2.000 km with it according to strava which does not seem a lot. have it 14 months now. brought it in for maintenenance as the crank made noise, turns out the bottom bracket is broken. the 2021 has a threaded bb52, the 2020 is a sram powerspline. i.m in Europe. the replacement part is on backorder with delivery november 2021.
dealer was ok with me finding the part myself. i.m in europe, belgium. any suggestions? still need the specs but is there another brand/model that works? need my bike this summer! i need a sram powerspline truvativ something.

are you sure the bb is powerspline?
there's a Truvativ Howitzer XR M12 Innenlager BSA-68/73 on bike24
it has the same powerspline interface

Long-time lurker in this thread — lots of great stuff in here!

I have a sizing question for anyone who owns, or who's ridden, a 2021 Chisel. I'm getting one in the next month, and I'm beyond excited! It's a base model, size large, and I've never demoed it — COVID has severely limited supply in my country, and that's the only size that's being shipped to my LBS.

So the question: do you think it'd fit someone who's a little under 5'11"? I have a 32" inseam, with pretty long arms (my wingspan is a little larger than my height). Does anyone with similar dimensions ride a large? According to Specialized's measurements, I'm right on the lower end of the large, but my road / gravel / track bikes are all in medium. It's also my first MTB, so I'm a little less familiar with sizing. Anyone have any insight?

Also: I expect to use it to ride light trails, nothing super gnarly. Really hoping that shortening the stem and shifting the saddle forward helps with the fit, because I'm really stoked to get a Chisel!

I have a 2021 Chisel in Medium. I am 5' 10" tall. To me its a perfect fit. Have you gone to the Specialized site and done the measurements for the sizing? I did MULTIPLE times and it always came back as a Medium, even though my last bike was a Rockhopper Comp 1X in Large...The Medium Chisel fits me like a glove. I am at the edge though....so I think you will be good on a Large.

Thats the specialized sizing tool....grab a tape measure and input the measurements. I bet they are pretty close to what you need...also tells you where to start with Saddle height as well. I found it spot on.

With your description you gone be fine in large. Remember you always can play with the length of the stem. I'm a 6 And like a sharpened bike. My stem is 35.

This is great, I had no idea this tool existed! Like you, I also got a medium, with a 71.3cm recommended saddle height. Looks like I'm right on the edge of a medium and large too, though they're recommending a medium. I'll probably test ride the bike when it arrives, but still, it's probably not a good sign that it's not the recommended size haha.

Thanks for sharing!

Just tried the fitting tool shared here, and it recommended a M, but it's good to know a L is fitting you and we're not too far off in measurements. Definitely plan on trying a shorter stem too.

Also, that colour frame with a rigid fork is gorgeooooooous. We only have the grey / black version in Canada!

I'm 5'8" on a medium and definitely would not want it to be any smaller. I think Large would be spot on at your height.

Thanks! This kind of intel is super valuable because I can't actually ride the bike yet ? Glad to hear it. I have the option to refund my deposit on the bike, but I'm gonna hold on until I can test it

Question...now that I have riden my 2021 Chisel for 300+ miles, what upgrades should be prioritized? I already have a Command Post dropper post and Race Face Chester pedals. I has thinking carbon handle bars...going tubeless, and then? Are the Stout Pro cranks boat anchors? I cant find any info on them...XT cranks are not too expensive and may be a nice weight savings. Maybe XTR cassette and chain? Next year probably a lighter fork (Fox 32?).

Here is a pic of it just before a nice trail ride....

1. Going tubeless is the cheapest upgrade, i've done that first thing after I bought my Chisel.
2. Change the rotors, the stock ones are resin only
btw nice 2002

cool! I will get the tubeless kit and make that my next upgrade. Did alot of research and Orange Seal seems to get the best reviews for ease of install as well as puncture sealing. I read that the Chisel has rim tape installed so i just need valves and sealant, correct? Thanks for noticing the 2002, i get the bike inside by removing the front wheel and laying the passenger seat back. Most people are shocked a bike fits INSIDE that car. Im restoring a 64 volvo wagon to be my bike carrier so the 02 doesnt have to lol.
