After a few upgrades to my Chisel I love the way that it rides. Below are the upgrade that I have made. I would note that the Reba RL fork was the best upgrade so far. The Judy gold was a decent fork, but had a lot of flex to it. The Reba does not have much flex, and has better dampning and rides slight higher than the Judy. I tried a 27m riser bar, but ended up taking it off. When climbing it put me to far back on the bike and I started loosing traction on the front wheel. I think I would like to try a 15mm or 20mm riser bar to see how it feels.

Current Upgrades:
Reba RL Fork
Shimano SLX 7100 Brakes
PNW 120mm Loam Dropper post
Specialized Bridge Saddle
Specialzied Ground control front tire (A lot better traction in loose / wet ground)

Future Upgrades:
Wheel set
Crankset (installed a cheap set of pedals and damaged the c'bore on the crank). Pedal now wont stay tight.

Nice!

Depends on how much of the bike you are going to upgrade. It does have amazing price/performance value out of the box though.

Just want to say thanks to all of the posters in this thread. I'm a roadie that just bought a Chisel Comp based upon the information in this thread. The type of information I have found in this thread is what I wish I could've found in the internet reviews for this particular bike.

It seem like this is something other users are after so I will try to give back here. But I have and 2021 XL that has had every sticker stripped off and mine is weighing in at 27lbs, +/- .2lb. I am just using the bathroom scale method, so YMMV.

Also, I haven't gone tubeless yet. Once I convert I will be more than happy to post the weight after if anyone is curious.

TL/DR Just wondering bit anyone had ever fitted a rack or much bikepacking gear to their chisel and how they got around the lack of mounting points.

Mine has morphed over the summer into a much more everyday bike.
It started out as an X1 comp bought in late 2019 (2020 model?)

Since then I have swapped the bars and stem for a very short dmr stem and carbon riser bars, carbon s-works 'overendz'

The forks are Lauf TR Boost with 60mm travel

The wheels were changed to hope pro 4 with CX-Ray blades spokes and carbonal rims and Vittoria Mezcal tan-wall tyres.
To be honest I commissioned these through lockdown boredom and for the looks rather than because they offer any real world advantage. I am a bit of a weight weenie as well

The seatpost is a Thudbuster LT topped with a Fabric scoop elite. this brings its own clearance issues.

hope people can see the pictures, let me know if you cant

These changes make it great for the local trails which are mainly flat forest gravel. I live in one of the flattest parts of the UK on the edge of a large heathland/nature reserve with trails starting 1km from home.

It also needs to be an all-round bike as I am slightly challenged for storage, although I do also have 2 X Bromptons as well, plus an older sirrus hybrid, a Raleigh twenty awaiting restoration and an old Dawes English 3-speed that I keep at my mother's as a 'village bike'

So the Chisel is an everyday bike, though admittedly a rather OTT one.

This year I would like add a front rack/bag for going to the shops or work.
And also make the bike more bike-packable.

The chisel is devoid of braze-on and luggage mounts so this is a bit of an issue.
I have never been that fond of seat-pack bags anyway but the Thudbuster makes fitting one very awkward anyway.

I have ordered a pair of Baryak Mules to attach bottles/cages to the Lauf forks.

A conventional front rack is not possible (afaik) so I am thinking of adding a Timtas steerer-mounted front support and custom bag. I debated trying to source p-clips and a more conventional rack but I'm also nervous or attaching something like this to the carbon fork. i suppose that the stresses the steerer is designed for (i.e. people/crashes) should far outweigh the stresses of a rack so it should be ok

At the rear, to get round the lack of eyelets and the travel of the Thudbuster seatpost, I originally thought if a carradice bagman support and bag, but am now erring more towards a simple rack.

For the rack I like the Tailfin racks or the nitto R-10. Both these options mount at the seatpost and then either the thru axel or the seatstays which gets around the lack of eyelets.
The Tailfin can have eyelets/braze-on for cages on the support struts, this would be very handy and it would get used for more than just bikepacking so handy too.

i love the simplicity of the nitto

just wondering about peoples thoughts and ideas really.

I removed the tubes right away and added a bit of Stan’s, it was easy to do. As a roadie you may be interested in the S Works version of this tire, there’s only a $10 difference and they weigh 595gm vs 720gm per tire. When these wear out I’m gonna go with them.

Hello, I have a question about the fork offset on the Chisel Base and Comp 2021. So in the tech specs for Chisel it says the fork offset is 42mm. However, the Rock Shox specs for 2020 and 2021 have a 51mm fork offset, both Judy Silver and Judy Gold have no fork offset like 42mm. So what are the real offset in your forks?

The actual offset is 42mm on the fork. I think a lot of the bike manufacturers are trying to increase the trail on there bikes, so they are custom orering shorter offset forks from the factor. When I replaced my Judy gold fork with a Reba RL the only way I could keep the 42mm offset was to buy a new "take off" fork from another bike. My other option was to go to a Fox 32 SC or a SID SL fork because they offer a shorter offset in those forks, but I did not want to spend that much money right now.

Creaking noise coming from the headset on a 2019 chisel comp x1 29. I am going to replace it and I was wondering if anyone knows if the CANE CREEK 40 ZS44/56 TAPERED HEADSET will fit? And in the off chance I wanted to slacken the head tube angle would the
CANE CREEK ANGLESET ZS44 / EC56 work?
Thank you

Hello,

Im looking to buy 2021 Chisel comp, but all LBS shops are closed due to covid situation..can maybe someone comment on the gloss black/abalon colour option. Description says gloss black... but on the pictures and videos it looks more mate/satin?

So is the colour mate black or shiny gloss?

Thanks.

Did you the search option on the specialized website? It can be hit or miss sometimes.

Thanks... that was the info i looked for... specialized.com says its gloss black but it looks satin ... how are you satisfied with colour ?
It's plain black with white decals, nothing much to say about it. I like black it's easy to touch up. The paint seems durable although I put a clear laminate film on the top tube to guard against damage from my bike rack.

What kind of riding do you do with that rigid setup? Looks great! [emoji1303]
My roots are BMX. And l love the sharpest bike But I'm not a younger anymore. I run mostly flats trails with some obstacles, When I feel more juvenile I switch to ROCKSTAR.
