I'm looking for something I can ride with my boys on varied terrain, gravel, parking lots, paved/gravel trails.

I have a SJ for my trail rides. Is the Chisel too steep for a general light duty play bike? I love the weight vs. the Fuse and the Fuse fork is overkill for what we'll be doing, so I'm really intrigued by the Chisel, just can't figure if its too hard core XC oriented.

Thanks

I think that the chisel would be an awesome general purpose bike, but if you don't plan to trail ride the rockhopper will be a lot cheaper option and and probably fit your needs. I test rode both bikes this year and can tell you that the geometry is very similar on both bikes. I don't think that you will feel like the 2021 chisel is to XC oriented. The Chisel is overall a better quality bike that will take more abuse than than the rockhopper, but also cost 20-40% more (depending on model). Right now it is also very difficult to find a Rockhopper in stock.

I`ve picked 2021 Spec Chisel in Raspbery three days ago. I could choose between 2020 (slightly cheaper) and new model, and went with new one because I like Shimano drivetrain better, and new geo was also important for me.

I`m 187cm and ride large, it fits perfect. So far I did around 80km on my local tracks. Handling is fast and responsive, acceleration is superb. Cockpit feels ok, saddle is pretty comfy, we`ll see on longer trips.
Drivetrain is precise, on my other FS bike I have XT shifter so on Chisel I sometimes miss the option to drop 2 gears with one push.

Bike is stock except I went tubeless with Trezado valves and sealant - it was fast and easy with cheap floor pump.

If you are interested here is weight of:
- front wheel + 180mm rotor - 1070g
- rear wheel + cassette + 160mm rotor - 1950g
- tire - 740g
- tube - 274g

Tomorrow I go for a mountain trip so I can give you more details how this bike handles on steep climbs/descents.

Those "heavy" wheels

As I've mentioned here before, there's something good about those wheels. I have a 1550 set of wheels and the stock ones. Stock ones ride better in the bumps there is absolutely no doubt.

Not only that, but as I mentioned here a couple years ago, I had a bike team friend whose bike malfunctioned at a 6 hour endurance event. He rod my backup bike, my Chisel, with stock wheels. In the open division there were 40 and he came in 3rd, less than two minutes behind first.

Occasionally we get these eye openers. I do the Chisel because I have found that hardtails are more work, more full-body exercise. My back and body stay fitter. On purpose I stand a lot, more than maybe needed or best for pure speed. But oh my goodness what superb exercise this is.

I am 66 years old and yea I do still race...on my 23.5 lb Camber. In 50 and over Cat 2 I am generally mid fleet to lower third, sometimes near the bottom if those who should be Cat 1's participate...the exact 50's bunch who are sometimes faster than both the 40's and 30's.

Raker, what size, year and level is your Chisel? Stock build at 23.5# or have you made any impactful mods?

I have the same 2021 Chameleon Frame!

Hi There! I am building the same bike! I have the same green color for the 2021 chisel. I wanted to ask what headset did you get? I believe we need this part for the crow race..https://cambriabike.com/products/cane-creek-10-40-100-110-series-alloy-crown-race-52-40-1-5 but what else would I need for the complete headset? Bearings? By the way...I went with the Shimano XT drivetrain, brakes, chain, shifter and the XTR derailleour. I also with the SLX 10-45 cassette because the XT cassette was $50 more for just one gear that was alluminum instead of steel so I went with the slx instead.

Niceeee!!!

Your build is sick! I have the samr green frame and I am building mine now. What copmonents did you go with and what size did you cut your tbe down to? Im going to go with a fox 32 fork...debating between the orange and black one. I went with XT components on everything except the derailleur is a xtr. I see you have the sram gold chain and srtam drivetrain! Looks good man!

Nice!

It looks really good! I also have the large size and I am in the process of building it now. I have all the parts except the fork which I will get next year. I got the fox transfer seat post as well to match the fork. I cant wait to ride it! How has it been riding so far? Man...this colorway is so pretty when the sun hits it!
