Hi,

I‘m in as well. Stefan from Germany, 1,92m tall and 115kg heavy. Complete Newbie to the world of MTB, but sucked in completely.
Bought the Chisel two weeks ago and rode the first trails already. Loved it! Working on my skills now. Bunny hopping, etc...

I changed a few parts on the bike already, such as the salsa quick release for the saddle post and obviously the pedals (reverse escape). Now, after the first rides i noticed i will need a slightly higher bar and can also deal with a wider bar overall. So I ordered a Renthal Fatbar with 40mm Rise and a 0 degree stem to go with it. Spacers too, but I‘ll first go without them / assembling them on top of the stem so i have them with me.

For me it was a decision between a Trek Roscoe 8 and the Chisel. Glad I chose the chisel. I really like the frame and i think it never HAS to leave me. From what i read at some point it might be worthwhile to upgrade to Reba shocks and finding a dropper post will be difficult (at least one that can carry 115kg and has the right diameter), but until I can ride it that hard i will still need a lot of time.

Being from Germany, I suggest to look at German Syntace products. They have carbon parts that pass the most strict crash tests. I plan to buy their carbon handlebar to get more vibration dumping. I also play around with grips. Currently have Specialized XC Race Grips.

Don't upgrade to Reba. Its low compression dumping sucks. If you want good fork get Fox or SID at some sale at bike24 or bike-discount.de. If you want something cheaper get RockShox Sektor which has better air chamber (DebonAir) and removable bottomless tokens allow to better fine tune compression. Sektor is heavier but accepts wider rubber. With your weight 120mm could be better choice.

If you have model with SLX shifters, upgrade to XTR for 60 Euro:

Here is my 2018 Chisel expert. This will be my 2nd year with the bike and already I am in love again with it. Over the last 1.5 years I have upgraded the wheels, tires, bars, grips, brakes, seatpost, saddle, stem, and cassette. I am 6'3" and ride an XL. So far I have the bike at 23.3lb.

Next upgrade: Race Face Next SL crank

Spec List:
XL Frame
Carbon Romin Saddle
S-Works Seatpost
Race Face Turbine 100mm stem
Race Face Next 31.8 Carbon Bar (I cut about .25" off each side)
Wolf Tooth Mega Fat Grip
XT Brakes with XT Rotors
Rockshock Reba (stock - feels fine)
Race Face Aeffect Crank (Stock soon to be in a parts bin)
GX 11-speed 1X shifter and rear derailleur.
1175 Full Pin Cassette - 10-42 XD
DT Swiss X1700 Spline (22.5 internal width)
Vittoria Mezcals setup tubeless of course (super nice!!!!)

Overall the bike has been a blast to ride and will pretty much ride through whatever I take it to, rock gardens, singletrack, rooty sections, etc. I raced my first Cheq40 on this beast and cant wait to get back! I am really liking the frame the more and more I ride it. The frame feels supple and springy which took some getting used to but if ridden a certain way can make for a load of fun. Over smaller pumps the springy frame is easy to get air born but also easy to pump and gain speed. I find it a bit hard to get lift off smaller drops but working on that. The biggest improvement was my fit, swapping the stock 110mm stem for a shorter stem and dropped bars for more aggressive position and it feels a lot better for me on the mix of terrain we have in central Iowa.

Did you get a deal on the 1175 cassette? I can't bring myself to paying that much for a cassette, and I can't find it in that 50.

Yeah i scored mine from Merlin so the price was a no brainier for the X1700. It is quite amazing the level of build quality we have to choose from when it comes to aluminum wheels these days. For $350 these "mid-level" wheels took over a lb off the bike from the stock wheels. They are responsive, stiff and were true out of the box and are still true after I've been beating them up pretty good. The 350 spline hubs are nice and allow for a future 54 tooth upgrade which will come in time 😉. Spent the money I saved on the wheels on the Mezcals and it's like riding on butter.
I am a DT Swiss fan I ride the ER1600 Spline 32s on the CX/gravel rig. Ultimately I wanted an XC bike and so I went with the smaller width that match with the 2.25 tire width.

DT Wheels are highly regarded. My son is racing on their carbon wheels in his road bike. As far as I know there is very little difference between 350 and 240 hubs. If my colleague is correct, once you fit them with SKF bearings you will have basically same hub but 40 gram heavier.

A guy in my LBS rides Chisel with Spesh Roval Traverse carbon 30mm wheels and says that 2,3 tires seem to have better contact patch and hence traction on 30mm rim.

Same statement here:

But I understand the need for lighter XC bike.

These Mezcals are bloody expensive.

Awesome bikes everyone!

Just got my Chisel Expert 1x few days ago, Made tubeless, so far so good. 11.3kg with tool ,pedals and bottle cage. Brakes need to be worn in as they aren't perfect yet.
Only issue that I have right now is that when I gear up, especially last 3 gears, it sometimes has some "dead space" or not sure how to call it, takes 1sec to shift sometimes and then crank hops forward little bit.

Does anyone have the same issue? Not sure if it will disappear with time or is it usual for stock wheels? Asked bike shop, they said that it's the Hubs. I will probably change the wheel-set at some point in the future but just wondering if I should just change the hubs before that. I have heard that There are some issues (things to change) if u want to upgrade some parts of this bike, so cant just hop to x01 cassette etc. Feel free to give any recommendations and information about the bike. Thank you and have a nice day!

Not sure if this thread is still live. My rebuilt stumpjumper is done. Cant get parts for a triple crank. Looking at chisel. My problem... I ride 50/50 singletrack and limestone bike trail (old converted train tracks). Afraid with a 32 chainring I may spin out on limestone path. Or if I can put a bigger chainring on 38 maybe 42 it will be tough on big singletrack climbs. Thoughts? Is a double front chainring viable? I appreciate the feedback.

You can run a double if you like. My frame came with a front derailleur mount that would be held in place with the bottle cage bolts.

You could also look at the e*thirteen 9-50 cassette for a little more range than SRAM or Shimano if you want to stay 1x.
