Original Specialized diameter of the clamp is 30.8mm

Good call, ZigaK! Thank you!:thumbsup:

Typical Salsa, burley and beautifully made. It worked with no modification, but even fully open it squeezed the seatpost just enough to hold it a bit tighter than I like. This may have been due in part to the carbon paste I use to grip the carbon Cobble Gobbler post.

I used a Dremel and then some sand paper to take a little off the inside of the clamp. This released some of the clamping pressure remaining in the open position. Easier to move the post now. I'm still considering a dropper, but this will do in the meantime.

I have gone the other way. Because I couldn't source the Salsa 30.6, I bought a Hope 31.8 and inserted a 0.5mm thick adapter, basically a 0.5 mm strip of metal, between the seatpost and the clamp.
It is not a perfect solution, I have to tighten it really hard, otherwise the post slowly slips down.

As a subject change,

I've had my Chisel for about a year. One thing I noticed right off, is it climbs like a scalded cat.

In discussion this past Sat. with 3 riding buddies, all on vintage 26" bikes, and as they asked me to slow down a bit, I commented that it's the bikes fault, the 29" wheels are faster and the geometry just makes the bike climb better than what I had used prior, a 2014 26" Stumpjumper FS.

They didn't believe the geometry could be that much better, that I must have lost weight or something.

Thoughts ?.

Just checking in to say that I am running a 28/38 SLX FC-M7000 double with aftermarket Stronglight chainrings, and the frame clearance for the 38T is a wee bit better than for the 28T. Not that either is anything to be alarmed at. I am imagining a 36T single would fit right in. And—drumroll—it is a non-boost crankset on a boost frame! I have fitted a Rotor bottom bracket with one spacer ring on the drive side.

Wanting a lighter crankset with a single maybe but not sure if the Q-factor will be right.

Yes.

The frame has cups inserted when you purchase it. You can drop standard 42/52 bearings into these, but I cannot think of standard aftermarket bearings that would fit due to the peculiar depths of the cups. You would need to go after the bearings made for the '17 Epic or something.

I went ahead and knocked the cups the hell out and put these in:
Top,
Bottom.

These just worked. Any others in this standard, e.g. KCNC or Cane Creek, will work as well.

For clarity: 44/56 are the inner diameters of the headtube, and 42/52 are the inner diameters of the cups pressed into the headtube when the headtube is larger like the Chisel's-or of the headtube that does not take any cups. So, some (ZS) headtubes take the cups, others (IS) have races and take bearings directly. That is pretty much all the difference between 42/52 and 44/56. I believe the bearings are 42/52 in both cases.

The "Tapered/E2" in the Hope document seems to be it.

Can somebody clarify the headset question once and for all please?

Lots of info above, but some saying 42/52 and some 44/56?

Based upon the stench doc for Hope https://www.hopetech.com/_repository/1/documents/HOPEHEADSETS2011Web.pdf I'm thinking number 2 top cup and type E bottom?

I love this bike. It's more xc than I usually like. I wish it was just a little more playful (not my word but it works). It wheelies fine but pulling up for drops is a bit slow. It doesn't help that I'm another year older and more broken than last year. [emoji2369]

My 2020 Chisel set up for bikepacking. Just waiting on a Jones H Bar to arrive. Haven't used it yet in anger for bikepacking. Got it just before the CV-19 hit here in Tassie.
Only been able to ride it around my area - forestry roads and 4wd tracks. View attachment 1323723
Really cool, I'd like to set mine up similarly in the near future to dip my toe into the bikepacking world. Interested in how you adjust cockpit length to accommodate the sweep on a Jones bar.

Until then, mine continues to get the most mileage in my fleet lately due to trail closures. It's a great choice for mixed surface rides on pavement, gravel and off-the-radar singletrack.

Besides a very good system configuration, it's got an OK fork and wheels, but they get the job done.

What as surprised and pleased me the most is how well it climbs. Geometry ?, I assume that's the reason, but as a Clyde I can state I'm not into hills, yet this bike goes up stuff no other bike I've owned could handle as well.

Hi there,

I also own a chisel, 2018 edition, matte black & red.

Did anyone here already use some frame protection on a Chisel? For instance, on the down tube and at the back of the seat tube, to protect against stones on gravel roads? Especially on a matte black version? If so, what product did you use and how did a look? Can you share pictures?
Since the tubes of this bike are so thin, I'm really curious about the effect...
