would definitely not recommend a $850 fork with blue lowers to match the grips and pedals. goes against the unwritten rules of cycling. also, SRAM/RS didn't update the Charger Damper in that fork for the new model year 2020 fork for some reason and Charger 2 damper receives bad reviews. not something I could pick apart, but I'd definitely go for a Fox fork and if you really need to there are blue Fox fork lower decals on ebay.

I finally picked up my 19 comp 1x in Black/Storm Grey today. After one quick blast around the streets/local parklands I can confirm that this bike is everything I have read and imagined. I can't wait to throw on a few upgrades (pedals & tubeless to start) and hit the trails.

The last photo is my wife's arial with my chisel. She has named it "Eric" from The Little Mermaid

Damn I sure do love this bike! I've been on it about 6 months now, and every time I ride it, I come away with a big smile and great sense of satisfaction. I'm pretty big into nasty, technical climbs, and this little beast has been about the perfect tool for this type of riding. It also does really well on regular old singletrack, and I've never felt uncomfortable going down hill on it, though I do take the downhills very conservatively.

My only possible complaint, and I don't think it's specific to this bike but more to 29'ers in general, is that I sometimes get unexpected pedal strikes when working my way through heavily rocky/rooty sections. (This is my first 29'er, and my old 26'er had a higher BB, so pedal strikes were almost never an issue.) I have yet to come off the bike because of it, but its the one thing I still get a bit of an unpleasant surprise over every now and then. (I'm getting better and recognizing when they're likely to come though, and am planning for it better.)

Specialized really seems to have gotten a whole lot of things right with this bike. Between the supple frame and the 2.35" Ikons I have on it, its a pretty plush ride for a hardtail, but it also has the liveliness and stiffness that make me want to be on a hardtail in the first place.

REALLY GREAT BIKE!!!

Last update to my red rocket.
Stock comp 1x build with:
Sid ultimate rlc 120mm
Pnw rainer 110 (the one suggested here)
Camo chainring elĂptical 32t wolftooth
Spacer bbling and dropper remote wolftooth
Cool looking bike!

How do you like the SID 120?

How do you like the PNW Rainer Dropper?

How is the eliptical chainring working? Any rub? Clears frame?

the suspension has been a night and day upgrade vs the stock judy gold. 120 travel unlocks further downhill capabilities, just went out a couple of rides and so far so good.

PNW is really solid, smooth and soft operation with wolftooth remote at least, really good price/performance, and it is kinda light, weights 480 grms! for 200 usd is a no brainer

I am a fan on oval rings, have it on both bikes it improves traction on technical climbs and I dont see any disadvantage. put ovals on long rides with 50 km + on the road and no trobles. I think that will clear even 34t oval rings or 36 round

Have both and I agree. Really surprised at the quality and operation of the PNW for the price. Put ovals on both of my mtb and installing on gravel bike today. I noticed an improvement on hills.

Long Term Review on Specialized Chisel Expert 1x Hardtail

I've been riding this bike for a year.

Here is my long-term review on Youtube:

Spoiler Alert: I love this bike.

It is exactly want I wanted.

I've been riding mountain bikes for 20 years. Not a racer, but ride weekly on my local trails to stay fit and have fun.

I usually ride by myself, but occasionally with other riders.

Our big thing is racing UP the hill to the top of the mountain (typically takes 40-45 minutes to get to top). Then fly back down.

On most rides, I spend 75% of the time climbing and 25% descending.

So I wanted a light bike I could fly up the hill on. The Chisel does just that.

I was on a 2003 Specialized Epic full suspension (with 26 inch wheels) that I bought brand new and rode for 15 years. Still be riding it, but the rear shock finally went out (and Spec does not offer any parts to repair).

When that happened, I dusted off my old 1999 Gary Fisher Big Sur hardtail and started riding. Forgot how fun a hardtail can be. The pedal power goes directly into the rear wheel 1 to 1.

I was in a car accident (hit by a drunk driver) in my early 20's (51 now) and suffered chronic lower back pain. So thought I needed to be on a soft tail. Wrong.

Been riding this Chisel hardtail for one year. My back feels great. I had been visiting a chiropractor weekly twice a month for years. Now just a few times per year. I think my CORE is stronger with all the hardtail pedaling.

I've only made a few changes to the Chisel.

1. Rear Cassette. I rode the original NX 11-42 for a few months. It worked great. But I wanted a lower gear for climbing. So I installed the SunRace 11-46. Love having that extra granny gear. And it was lighter. Here is a video on my review of the SunRace and how it works on the Chisel:

2. Dropper Seatpost. I added a PNW Rainier 27.2 IR 110 mm dropper. Because of the small seat tube diameter, there are very few droppers that will work. The PNW has been flawless. It rocks. My first dropper. Can't believe I rode 20 years without one. It is so much safer on the tech descents - even just getting low on the flow. Highly recommend it. Here is a video of how I installed it:

3. Thicker Tires. I really like how the Fast Trak tires roll. However, I had sidewall cuts (from trail rocks) on both the front and back tires. So I replaced with heavy duty Maxxis DHF and DHRII. Although a bit heavier, I really like the grip and durability of these new tires. Hit lots of sharp rocks and heard the dreaded "dink" noise, but zero flats.

Tubeless is the way to go. Lightens everything up, and no more pinch flats (used to happen several times per year with tubes).

I'm between sizes (L and XL) at 6'2" with 32 inseam. I went old school (keeping bike small so light and flickable) and got Large. Now I think I'd get XL for more stability on downhill speed.

This bike is light and durable. Love the frame. Looks cool and rides "soft".

I've ridden this bike at least 100 rides. It's great.

Sure I've missed something important.

If you have any questions, put them in the forum, and I'll do my best to answer.

Chisel on tech trails?

Can you ride the Chisel down tech sections? And up?

I put this question to the test on my local trails.

Here is a video of the experiement on YouTube:

Hope you have as much fun watching it as I had making it.

It did not go exactly as planned.

definetely best upgrade is wheels, over 500 gram lighter, it came in about 12kilos, seatpost (syntace), seat (selle italia 165grs), handlebar (nonbranded 120grs) and grips, (silicone) like 450 gram shaved. fox stepcast performance is about 1450 gram and judy gold is near 1900, so 450 grams lighter, total: quiet near to 1.4 kilos loss of weight. Sorry, forgot to answer

Few days ago I ordered a chisel expert 2019 in Satin Gloss Black/White. I orderd a L frame because I have a step length of 90cm and a high of 1.80m. I hope this was the right decission. My former 15 years old Stumpjumper FSR is also L and I am still impressed about all of this bike! Thanks to this forum and especially to this interresting discussion. Thanks always to Specialized because they build the best and best looking bikes in the market for me, since ever! Now I can't wait to get the bike :)

I'm 185 cm with 91 cm inseam. Ordered a L but couldn't get the seat high enough. Length was ok. But in order to be able to fit a dropper at some point, I returned it and ordered a XL instead. L might work for you though, it was touch-and-go for me.

Very nice bike, too!!!

I ordered the black with white Specialized, because for me it's the most beautiful frame set ever :)

What I also like is red with white Specialized, but this is not available.

My colors are old scool, but I am born 1966 and saw the beginning of Specialized!

Here's mine XL Chisel!

Put a rigid fork in it, since we have smooth rolling trails here.

Salsa Bend deluxe
Thomson 90mm stem and seatpost
XT drivetrain
M1700 DT Swiss wheels

Maybe I will go with a wider front rim and some 29x2.60 tires
