I saw some interest at the beginning of this thread in bigger tires, but what's the consensus on biggest 29" tires possible in the Chisel?

Anyone try a 2.5?

How do you guys like the stock Fast Trak Gripton tires? I'm interested mainly in fast rolling while not being too sketchy on loose over hard. I normally run Race Kings in the rear and Bontrager XR2 team issues in the front. Are the Fast Traks good enough that it would just be throwing money away to replace them right off the bat?

Just got my Chisel today. Looks awesome in the black and green. Better in person than in the pictures.

Quick question: I noticed that the front axle has the torque specs printed on the bolt but not the rear axle. Does anyone know if the same torque is specified for the rear?? I would think they should be slightly different since the frame is different from the fork and the rear axle is 12mm vs 15mm in the front.

Thanks

Sounds good. Did anyone else get 2.3 tires both front anbd back?

Bike weighed exactly 25lbs with stock pedals and tubes.
I put 2.3's on mine, but i built mine from the ground up.
Mine is 21lbs 2 oz as of about 4 days ago.
I'm switching my brakes from Magura MT6's to MT8's though. I bought the MT6 as "new take offs" which they clearly were NOT when i got them.
After putting a ton of work into bleeding them, replacing pads and hoses and what not on the rear brake i finally got it working consistently, then went to replace the front hose with the new Jagwire hoses i bought (which i had already mounted on the rear brake). When i unscrewed the hose from the master cylinder and started hand tightening the new hose on, the threads came apart in my hands... so after being furious for about a half hour i switched my magura MT8 to my chisel from my niner SS for now. I'll be switching the rear brake over as well and going from there.

Some people just suck... sell your items with accurate and honest descriptions please. It's just the right thing to do.

To answer my own question--- there is no HD driver to fit this wheelset. Of course you can change to a XT 11 speed cassette to reduce a tad of weight.
Sorry, i must have missed that question. You are correct. There is no Sram XD driver for these wheels. Best bet is to run a cheaper cassette on these and then get a nicer wheelset and a higher end cassette to drop weight and have an all around better wheelset.

Anyone running a more aggressive 2.3 tire? Something like a say...an Aggressor?

I don't mind running narrower tires, but I can't run XC tires here in the sharp rocks and cactus of the desert.

I'm happy to see that the Chisel does in fact have routing for a stealth dropper, even if it is a small one. I'm thinking of getting a XL (I'm 6') with a 100mm dropper post and a 60mm stem. Would be about perfect.

Like the idea of a lightweight frame that isn't carbon and comes with a warranty.

COMTBR, sorry for my "HD driver" posts as of course it is "XD driver." I called Specialized today and spoke with a couple people, both seemed very up-to-date as to the Chisel and its components. Both said the wheels/hubs that come with the Expert model do not have a XD driver compatibility.

Thanks Tyrich88 as I also missed your response a few hours ago when making the below post. Easy to miss posts here with the format used by MTBR.

I am not too agitated by the wheelset (for whatever reason) if it is durable.... but I am horrified knowing the cassette weighs about 1 lb 2 oz. Seems absurd.

I don't see why you can't run something more aggressive. But it seems like a bit of a mismatch to want a light weight frame and then stick heavy tires on it and a dropper post. I'm guessing it will push the bike up into the 26lb or more range.

I wasn't ever able to get a clear answer from my Specialized LBS about an XD driver and now I know why. It doesn't exist for this rear wheel! I ended up buying a rear wheel with an XD driver and will put the XG 1175 on it - a good compromise between weight and price.

Great idea as the rear wheel/cassette is the stock bike disapointment.
