Been really enjoying my Chisel. Finally getting back to riding regularly after a pinched nerve so my fitness isn’t quite there but I’ve PRd or medaled pretty much everything I’ve ridden. Kind of neat leaving a place you ride regularly and have 20+ achievements and you know you aren’t at your best. Knocking 10lbs of a bike and not having rear suspension to bog your pedal stroke is pretty amazing.

The bike is much more composed than I thought it would be over rough terrain as well. I was really expecting to be super slow but it’s not bad at all. Once i figure out the nuances of a hardtail it’s going to be another round of achievements I believe.

I do want to get an insert for the rear tire. Would like to run a little lower pressure in the rear to help with cornering a bit. I have to get up around 28-29lb to keep from dinging rims but then it likes to slip out a bit in flat corners. First race tomorrow. 3 hour marathon. 9ish mile loop. Hoping for 5 laps.

I'm currenlty selling my stock wheelset.

My wheelset weights with rotors installed - Shimano SM-RT56:

Front wheel with a rotor (180mm): 997 grams
Rear wheel with a rotor (160mm): 1268 grams

My bike is Chisel from 2020, basic model, spec. for wheelset from the Spec site:

Rims: Specialized XC 29, 25mm internal width, disc-specific, tubeless ready
Front hub: Specialized, sealed cartridge bearings, 15x110mm thru-axle, 24h
Rear hub: Specialized, sealed cartridge bearings, 12x148mm thru-axle, 28h
Spokes: Stainless, 14g

You can check weight of those rotors online, so You will be able to calculate the weight only for the wheels.
What did you end up selling it for? I’m looking at a wheelset from 2021 chisel. Not sure how to price and also seems like I’m reading hard to set up tubeless.

You can also try bike24 for cheap basic wheelset. They have the basic Shimano ms hub laced to 25 or 30mm internal width wtb rims for like 100 euro, not far off used prices that I can see.

I have the stock wheelset and tires that I replaced soon after buying my Chisel in May. Just go back a few pages on this thread to see when I swapped them out. Tires are brand new as I switched them out the day I bought the bike. Will be putting them on offerup in a few days. PM me if interested.

He yall,
Just got a new Chisel (base) size L . Really impressed so far.

I have a question: Has anyone run 29x2.6" tires in the rear?
Thinking about Maxxis Rekon, with a wider 2.8" or 3" in the front. Will be on custom wheels, 35mm rims.

Soon swapping out to XT 11spd, Enve fork.

Why do you want to run a 2.6" or 2.8" tire on the chisel? The bike is a very fast XC bike and I think that the tires / rim combo that you suggested would be make it a feel very sluggish. I am running 2.3 tires front and rear (Fast track / ground control) and never had any problems with the on my local trails. When I want to ride more aggressive trails I use switch to my full suspension down country bike with 2.4" tires.

It's also a very compliant hardtail. I'm coming from a Krampus and like large volume tires. I picked the Chisel because it has very similar geometry but a lighter, smoother riding frame. Not racing. Riding tight trail East coast roots/rocks and I like a rigid trail bike.

Is there room in the rear for that width? I'm running 2.35" Ground Control tires on 29mm internal wheels, and it doesn't look like it'll fit too much more.

That's kinda what I'm thinking. I might just have to go with the 2.4" Rekon. But this frame rides so smooth I might not miss the wider tire as much as I think. With stock wheels, I rode over some root piles that I'm used to on my other bikes and I was blown away by how smooth it was. I mean, it's obviously a hardtail, but really good at soaking up the bumps.

I do like wider tires for some of the loose climbs. On my Krampus, I can regularly climb things that everyone riding with me has to walk. I'm not a better rider than them, it's just the width+low pressure.

I know one of my friends runs a 29x2.6" on his bike. Next time we ride I'll slip his wheel in the frame just to get an idea if it will work. If it doesn't I'm still gonna be pleased with this bike.

As I wrote a few years ago on here about the Chisel, oh yea a lighter wheelset is where most of us wanna go with the bike. But........I am telling you that stock flexible wheelset? Rides like a charm! I've gone back and forth with my Roval 1250 gram carbon wheels and the stock ones. Just ride the two over some rooty sections and you'll just laugh. Light and stiff is superior, very superior, in some respects------ but not all respects!

Thanks, yeah the stock wheelset doesn't seem bad. I just have a nice set of Stans Barons on White Ind. XMR that I'd like to use.
I'll keep the stocks and put some narrow tires on them for Winter gravel riding.

my stock rear wheel ended up getting dished nearer to the right seatstays but I managed to get it relative straight without a truing stand. Had to confirm it wasn't the frame that wasn't straight with another wheel.

Now wondering what replacement wheels to get, maybe a r2 build with dt 240s, or a set of 28 reserves but the price for those is crazy, A friend has the hunts but too narrow for my liking.
