I run 30" bars. I always ran 28" bars, but switched over last year.

I get alot of questions, funny looks, and doubts, but they are catching on in the market and I'm sure alot of people will convert soon. If you ride agressively and have average broad shoulders, then the ammount of control, stability, and comfort gained is really incredible. If you ride trails that are "too tight" for bars that wide, then you never would have gotten up to speed feel the benefits anyway. I recommend them, from XC to DH.

It can depend a lot on where you ride and how you ride. Even in west Texas, several of our trails have some decently tight turns and such in trees. I also lean fairly hard in turns...more moto I guess...and wide bars can be a problem in those situations when trees are plentiful. Wide bars are almost always better for DH and FR...and anywhere you can get away with the width. Otherwise some compromise is required. I run 26" bars on my Nomad and Bullits which seems about as wide as I can reasonably use and still get through the trees faster. When I go to Moab, I could probably easily switch to wider bars but haven't really found the need. I think a bike like a Nomad or Bullit with a long wheelbase and slack geometry allows one to get away with narrower bars. Everything's a compromise.

27"

I'm tiny 5' 8" 127# and small frame and can't seem to go with less then 27" bars. Shorter ones just bug me to much after I started dh/fr. All my bars are 27"-28". Even my blur xc is 27"! There are very few places I find them a problem. The leverage you get with just pushing on the bar is great.

so wider in the free area would be more stable? I just upped my bike to some Azonic double wall 30" and have not cut them yet... my stock bars were like 26" or something and thy seem way too narrow...

I run Race Face Sixc bars (27.5") on my Nickel and Orange, I can't ride anything narrower nowadays.

I've got a set of Sunline V1 OS 762's that I was running on my SS Dillinger until recently putting it up for sale, but they were quickly cut down to about 27.75" when I got them s I just couldn't fit them between some of the trees in my local woods!

I use to ride 28's for years, then went with the new super wide Boobars which are slightly over 30 (I believe they're 30.25). At first they felt way too wide and after a few rides, I decided to cut them down to 29.25 and I think they're perfect now. I do catch them every now and again, but I think the benefits definitely out weigh the negavtives...

Mojo - 750mm Havoc Carbon
Nomad - 750mm Havoc Carbon
Stigmata - 460mm Raceface Cadence :p

Here in Norcal the trees are big and far apart. No need for XC bars. I ran 787mm Deity Black Labels on my Demo 8 but ended up smacking my pinky into two different trees at Northstar.

That day I learned that 30" wide is my max. ;)
