Hi all,

Re-posting this in vintage, retro, classic section as i think i posted it first time in a normal thread.

Hi guys, nice to meet you all, is this my first post. So still leaning the ropes of this forum. But wanted to chat about scott unishock forks. I know these forks got a bad rap by most. And were pretty much all recalled. But after searching for a few months, i bought this one attached from the US, because i haven't been able to find one in the UK were i live. But i was wondering if anyone could tell me if the model i have was included in the re-call. As there doesn't seem to be any serial numbers on it. And after weeks of research and contacting scott directly, i still can't seem to find out exactly when each model was released. I know the 1991 versions weren't recalled. But i think these were the ones that a big "unishock" decals instead of the large scott decals. DeeEight seems to know more than anyone i've come across about these forks. But i cannot find a way of sending him a direct message so i'm really hoping he replies to this thread. I haven't started the tear down yet as family life keeps getting in the way, but i believe this model has springs rather than elastomers.

I bought this fork as seized / none working / parts only.

I just had a few questions before i start the tear down.

Has anyone ever found (either after market or poss from a different brand of fork), replacement leg seals that fit these forks, these are both shot.

And for anyone that owns one would you please take a quick look up the steerer tube to see if its plugged like this one. I can't tell if it's a metal or plastic plug/cap yet as its covered in grease / grime. Just wanted to check if its meant to be there? or if its has been added.

And if anyone who know these, can you see anything glaringly obvious that looks completely off / dangerous where you wouldn't even attempt to fix it. I know this version is probably included in the recall. So i know most of you will say not to run it. But it was just going to be added to a canal toe path commuter bike that i would never take down a trail & was going to just keep checking it for cracks etc.

Ps if i cant fix it my plan was to run it anyway just as a fixed fork, as i love the way these forks look, with the oversized tubes and massive vertical scott decals compared to the slimmer curved scott OEM forks etc.

So I'll start by saying sorry, I have nothing to bring to the table for you as far as parts, info, etc.

But I do own a couple of those, (even a rare CARBON one, oooooooo!).

I would ask if you plan on using this? Or if it has a specific place in your heart? Because they truly are one of the wonkiest, least functional, crap forks out there.

I'd position it alongside trying to date a corpse, what's the point?

If you want a usable vintage fork, there's soooo many more options that would actually work.

If you just like a challenge, and have no intent of ever riding it? Quite a different story.

I fully support oddball passion projects, so don't take this as dumping on your choices. But if you chose this out of some hope it would be a nice thing to actually use? I'm here to talk you down off that ledge.....

Hi MendonCycleSmith thanks so much for replying. And for the info. Wow so awesome you have a collection of these. Yes it's more of place in my heart. I grew up a big fan of scott bikes, but could never afford one. And remember seeing these forks. I'm huge fan of straight forks and love the oversized legs on these forms and the shape of crown. I also love the huge scott font decals on them. But yes i never got to ride one when they were released. And have read loads of comments about them being aweful and like a pogo stick. So it's more about the aesthetics for me. I want to add them to a 1992 Scott Super America bike i recently managed to buy. And i live in London in the UK, and this bike would only ever be used for riding on flat canal towpaths etc and never be taking down a trail. Even if i had to ride it locked into position it's more about being able to park the bike up at a pub etc and to be able to stare at it etc. This is why i would love to be to put it on the bike.

I wrote to scott sports about this particular fork model asking if they new when it was released / or if it was a recall model (before i posted on this forum). And got the below reply back just now. So least i 100% know now. Although another member on here had already clarified this before scott replied.

So mine is an earlier version so is ok. But they have a good point of the age of the these forks and that there prob not safe to ride anymore regardless of the re-call.

"Thank you for taking the time to contact us.

This was from back before Scott Sports bought the brand from Scott USA so unfortunately we do not have any catalogs available to see when these particular forks were released. The recall page does state that the unishocks with the white lower legs were not included as part of the recall. Please bear in mind that a fork of this age probably shouldn't be used as the integrity of the materials may have deteriorated over this time.
The forks have the "SCOTT" logo on the side of each fork leg. A sticker on the front of each leg reads, "UNISHOCK" with the designation "S", "LF", "VR", "TX" or "R."

Glad you got some info back.

Yeah, garage queen status is safest, or mild MUP type riding at most, and infrequently.

Life is a lot more fun when your teeth are still in place.

Mine are on my fork wall, probably 25, 30 various suspension forks from over the years. I too love the form, the nostalgia, the history, the technology, I get it.

Hey @mattbrown thanks so much for replying and sharing this info. Wow look at those forks absolutely mint condition, unreal. And so cool to see the original instructions in the bag with the green decals. Can't believe you have working set of these forks. So jealous. Thanks again. If you ever service them and take them apart please please do share some images of what they look like inside when they are basically brand new.
