Santa Cruz 5010 fork choice. Pike dual 130/160 or Revelation XX.

I'm looking for the opinion of all of you Solo/5010 experts out there. I am currently riding a Solo C with a Rockshox Revelation XX that is 130mm with 32mm stanchions but also own a 2014 Pike dual position air that is 130mm or 160mm depending on the position and has 35mm stanchions. Which would you choose to ride with your 5010 and why?

Revelation XX for shure. The pike at 160 is too much fork for the 5010 and I don't think SRAM recommends running it in the 130 mode except for climbing. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. A Pike SA lowered to 140 OTOH would be the bees knees (they say). (Edit: yes, the Pike also comes stock at 130 now.)

For 90 percent of the riding I do on my 5010 the 32 Fox at 130 is sufficiently stiff. (Disclaimer: I do have a X-Fusion Slant lowered to 140mm I'm planning on putting on at some point).

Correct, on the 160mm Pike, the 130mm setting is for climbing only. However, there are guys that are changing the internals to reduce the travel. Also, the 2015 5010 comes with a Pike, so apparently Rock Shox is offering a 130mm version of the Pike (at least OEM).

i have a Fox 34 130 on my solo and its great. well balanced precise steering and amazing on climbs. a buddy has a pike 140 on his and it is a bit more of a handful on climbs and the front end is a tiny bit floppy. a pike 130 would be perfect for the solo, i think.

I have a 130/160 talas on my solo and its purrrfect. though a Pike might be better! I cannot understand the resistance to running a bigger fork on a solo. you can do so much more on technical stuff.

Without knowing the max fork length that Santa Cruz recommend/allow, a general reason to not over-fork a bike are:

More travel = longer axle-to-crown = more leverage on the frame's head tube = possible overload of frame = possible frame damage or catastrophic failure = possible crash = possible injury or death to the pilot

so...you're saying that a solo is built so much weaker than a bronson that I might die with an extra 20 mil of fork travel? just because I love the added stiffness and the 1degree or so out on my head angle doesn't mean I'm riding my solo in the red bull joyride. it just means I'm having more fun on the samw trails I ride every day.

Hi codypup, you stated that "I cannot understand the resistance to using a "bigger fork on a solo". I then provided you an insight into why such resistance exists.

Getting more specific, the Santa Cruz website says:
Fork Compatibility 120-140mm

With this specific info, I think the following:
- It's possible/likely that SC will not (or will be very reluctant to) honour it's warranty on a frame that's had a fork longer than 140 used on it
- if a fork greater than 140mm is used, the frame may, or may not, be able to consistently deal the higher forces generated 1. at the head tube area, and 2. generally by the higher speeds/bigger impacts that the bike will be capable ... The trails ridden, and the rider's weight & technique & speed will also factor into what the frame can deal with.

...because my fork choice tells you everything you need to know about me and the trails I ride? that's a hoot. Santa Cruz employees have been putting all manner of bigger forks on various xc bikes for years. Search this forum for many others with this set up. my bike is perfect for me which is why I built it that way. light and low for long fire road climbs and a little shorter than a Bronson for the tight low speed single track with the option of extending the front for real steeps, again at relatively low speed.

One of their sales guys has a longer Pike up front. Saw it at hq this summer. Looked perfect to me! I dont like the Bronson because of the TT and chainstay lengths- slightly too long to be fun. The Nomad feels better but it's a big bike and I have to deal with tech climbs to get to the top of local super dh trails.
The 5010 is the best feeling bike I've ever been on and I don't see why putting a 160 fork would be insane. Giant did it with the Trance Advanced SX.

I've been entertaining the idea of trying a 36 Talas on my 5010 too, so you're not alone in your thinking codypup!

Question: It's my understanding that FOX did away with the CTD feature on the 36 and they now have a full range of HSC & LSC. This would make it difficult to quickly put it into a more efficient climbing platform. How does it climb? Specifically, if you were to do an Enduro race that has 1500 feet of timed climbing, how would the 36 Talas in 130 mode, compare with a Pike in Lock mode?

Double check me, I have a 29er 160/130 Talas, if you set up the shock in the 160 mode, it will firm up a little when you drop it to 130mm.

The 5010 isn't a cross country bike, its a trail bike. Put a burlier fork on it and have fun. Santa Cruz makes frames that are tough and can easily withstand anything you can throw at them. They probably just recommend stopping at 140 because of the Bronson. Now it you threw a DH fork on it, I'd think you might need a second bike.

Hey guys. I want a Pike.

Can I get a dual position (adjustable travel) Pike and run it 140 mm (high getting) and climb mode in 110 mm (climbing position) if I get dual position Pike 160 and change the internals??
That would be ideal. Then if I end up getting a Bronson or another bike with more travel I can take Pike with me.
Thoughts?

Thank you. I don't think most people consider a 34mm 160 mm single crown a downhill fork though. Honestly, this site has a higher ratio of people with their pants on too tight than any other bike site. Maybe there should be a poll on that?
