I got my hands on a Salsa Ala Carte with a one-off paint job. I got it from this fellow in DC from a local MTB forum. I rode it for about 5 mins around his front yard and drivewaya nd fell in love with the sweet steel ride the moment I took it over the rocks. 8 spd XTR cassette and FD. Older XT RD, CBR cranks, Sid dual air fork, King headset, 1" headtube, Columbus steel tubing  , SDG saddle...correction (its a Selle saddle, not SDG), salsa stem and stuff, enjoy!

What an awesome find!
I've been looking for that frame and paint combo for quite some time.

Classic, classic mountain bike.

I wouldn't say your paint is one-off....but I'd say it's not too common and pretty desirable. Just needs a rigid fork. :)

Pick up an old Mountain Bike Action and it's in there.

that's steel candy! everything is sweet there. rumpfy said it: where is the bontrager fork? it will lower the BB and make the ride snappy.
everything is beautifull: cranks, stem, bars, seatpost.

What a piece of crap!
Tell ya what.
Just to show you what a nice guy I am, I'll take it off your hands and even give you a few $ for it so you don't have to be embarrassed if you get caught riding it. ;)
Very nice:thumbsup:

I think Salsa's went to top tube cable routing in '91 or '92 so your's is probably earlier. The serial # will tell, Looks just like my '89, # SM317 :D

what columbus steel is that? i can't read it in the label..
I think that's just a generic Columbus decal. Most around that time were Columbus Cromor OR. Kinda heavy, but didn't detract from the ride of the bike at all.

A lot of times, there might be a tube from a different tubeset used somewhere in the frame. A lot of builders never put tube labels on their bikes because they were either inconsitent in what tubes they used, they felt it shouldn't be about what tubeset was used - but about the ride, or they mixed up tubesets to use what they felt was appropriate for each individual tube.

That's the Salsa frame I fell in love with when I was in college many a year ago. The shop I frequented had that paint version of the Ala Carte and the Kestrel MXZ. I wanted both really badly but couldn't afford either so I would just hang out in the shop staring longingly at them. I was looking at the new MBA this afternoon thinking I still would love one of the original Ala Cartes (but may have to settle for a new one).

Sorry to interrupt, but what in the name of all that's old and funky, is that guy wearing on his hands? Knuckle-less gloves......or am I missing something? Sweet Salsa BTW=:)
If i remember right those gloves were Fergies. One of my riding pals had some. They were neoprene wetsuit material with a thich layer of the same stuff in the palm.
