Just finishing up getting the parts for my Ripmo build. The last part I have to acquire is wheels and just wanted to get opinions concerning the Ibis 942 wheels. Seems like a very nice wheelset that complements the Ripmo very well. My only question is whether to pony up for the i9 hub version or go with the less expensive Ibis brand hubs?

Any thoughts?
They're really nice with fast, smooth engagement. And they make a buzz that many people like. I replaced the I9 hubs in my 742's with some DT Swiss 54-tooth cuz I'm one of those who can't tolerate the noise. I left them at the shop with the only request being that they don't put them on a bike of anyone I might ever ride with.

I've done a number of rocky climbs and never had an issue with the Ibis hubs. They are pretty damn quiet as well. Not a fan of the loud hubs. I am a huge fan of quiet bikes and my Ripmo is crazy quiet. Keeping it that way!

Both are good, I think it's down to what you prefer.

Maybe when Onyx gets their lighter hubs to market we can have our cake and eat it to.

Anybody know which airshaft style has been shipping on the Ripmos ('18 or '19)? I've struggled to get any small bump compliance out of my Performance 36, and trying to figure out what could be the problem. Seems like some people in another post ran into issues with wayyyy too much grease on the airshaft from the factory that was cutting into the negative air chamber volume, but I haven't pulled mine apart yet to check that out. Related: anyone running a Luftkappe?

Can't help you with the air shaft question, but had the same small bump issues on my 18 Factory 36. Installed a Luftkappe and it was like getting a new fork. Smooooth.

Running a Luftkappe and a CRConception damper cartridge. It's like a new fork. Didn't like the fork stock.

I've been running the Nobl hubs on my Ripmo with great success. The Nobl's hubs are Onyx internals with an aluminum body. I've been running Hadly / I9's for as long as I can remember and these have been an interesting change. The engagement is more of a soft lock and opposed of a hard locking feeling. But, the sound, it took me a while to get used to. Ripping down DH runs with absolutely no sound except the trail was very different feeling. You also creep up on people much easier with them.

Size XL, GX build. Called Competitive Cyclist a couple weeks back when I was in the market and they had one in stock that wasn't showing in online inventory.

Doing a lot of back-to-back rides with my built '19 Stumpjumper here in Phoenix. For reference points, I'm 6'2, 34 cycling inseam, +2 ape index, 180 before gear.

Changes from stock:

Hope Tech 3 E4 brakes with 180/180. Rental 40mm stem. RF SixC 820 carbon bars. Deity Knuckledusters. XT pedals. Wolftooth 30-tooth round ring. King cage. 9Point9 175 Fall line dropper. Maxxis DHRII rear tire.

This is about as smart/logical a build as you can get in my opinion. Sure I'd prefer bling hubs, XX1, Factory shocks... but you nailed the parts the matter most (ok, with a bit of a handlebar splurge) :)

Nice work.

^^^Thanks. Yeah this is a great way to save a bunch of money on the X01 wheel upgrade build and really get the same bike. 27lbs with crank brothers candy pedals. I'm happy!

Running an AB oval 32t, seems pretty close to the chainstay. Wouldn't want it closer. Think it equals about 34t on the biggest part. So 34 should be possible but with not so good clearance.
Well I bought and installed a 34 t ring. It does not fit. It's in contact with the chainstay.

No regrets whatsoever. I'll tell you that I believe these bikes are really similar and I have a demo setup on an SB130 in October at a Yeti Event so I'll know how they compare H2H then.

The Ripmo is so much fun and rides much smaller that the 160/145mm travel would leave you to believe as it pedals great and is snappy and lively and turns very well for a long wheelbase Bike.

It's very composed on chunder and chunk as well and feels solid on the steep stuff as well. Very good All around choice.
I'd be very curious to hear about your SB 130 experience.
