Ran into a pack of wolves last night, drop leg or chest holster?

I had a little run in last night with a pack of 6-8 wolves. startled them at 50 yards. Gave them a bluff charge and defiantly scattered them, then got the hell out of there. But now I am rethinking my never needed to pack for protection stance. I do hunt off of a bike and have been extremely successful. But the weapons where never very handy. Glad I did not have dog with me.

So what would the pros and cons be of a chest holster versus a drop leg holster. I do need to state there is a named wolf pack in my area and this is also where I do a lot of winter night riding.

if you don't like the issue, I don't care, don't post. Most all the hikers in the area are packing something. There was also a dog killed by a wolf a few miles away from my house. And this did occur 5 miles from my house on an afterwork ride.

When riding in the Idaho/Wyoming backcountry I would carry my firearm in a simple fanny pack. Rides very nicely below the hydration pack and was quick and easy to slide to the front for access. Wrap the gun in a section of dense foam padding or something similar to protect it from damage if you take a spill. Looking cool don't matter when your ten miles from nowhere and meet up with something that might want to chew on you.

What area was this in if you don't mind me asking? I saw some government employees doing a wolf study at lost creek a few weeks ago and I was surprised.

Improvised frame holster after running onto multiple tracks on the trail. First time I ran into more than a single set of tracks. Made me rethink the 5 shot .357 and change to a Glock 29 with 11 rounds of 10mm.

I would worry about a drop leg holster for summer riding were you are moving faster in case of a crash. I sweat too much for a chest rig so mine rides in a top pocket in the pack. I throw a serpa paddle holster in the pack in case I start seeing tracks so I can snap it in the frame bag or under the pack belt. Snow riding is slow and easy so the frame bag works without worrying about losing it in a spill.

nah, if that was it, i would have started packing after being bluff charged by a sow grizz with 2 cubs or when i was stalked by a cougar. Wolf season started today and this pack is to close to houses. I wish the forest service did not close the woods down.

I am thinking i might have to take a picture of a bike with an ar mounted to it and a fire extinguisher on the rear rack and a big knike on the seat tube.

Been into wolves more than once, curious creatures that have potential to rip you apart. Why they don't and have no interest in humans is beyond my comprehension. But if you're gonna pack i'd suggest the S&W Governor with 410 shot. It'll allow your crappy aim at a time of stress and tension some room for error. A couple bb's in the rear should be enough to scare them off. Same gun also capable of a .45 round. Bring one of these with you too....just in case the 410 is insufficient. Save the last bullet for yourself ; ) IMO, much better way to go than being disemboweled.

Ordered a Hill People Gear chest pack today. Will be carrying my FNX and bear spray. A archer on a elk hunt near here in Island Park got munched on today. Sounds like he had spray and a .44 mag. Could not get to his spray but did get some off handed shots off. He got lucky.
