I am looking at upgrading and going with a full SRAM GX setup for my 2011 Niner EMD 9, but don't have the money to go 11 speed. So, I was thinking of getting the GX front crankset, gx short cage 10 speed rear derailleur, 11-36 cassette. Are there any special considerations I need to make? Should I use the 11 speed chain because of the crankset? Do I need to get a new Bottom Bracket or should my existing one work?

The SRAM 1400 GX crankset is the best value on the market, in my opinion. I'd get a direct mount narrow/wide ring to run on it. You will have no problems with a 10-speed chain and it will work with an 11-speed build in the future.

I got the bike cheap and the drivetrain is worn out. It is an old 9 speed deore. So, that's why I'm looking to upgrade, as I don't want to sink money into rehabbing the exisiting. I would need a new front chainring anyways and the sram GX 1x crankset can be had for only $108.

So, a 10 speed chain works fine on that crankset then?
