Problem removing chainrings from Crank arms

I Have a SR Suntour crank set. I bent the outer chain ring beyond repair while riding it. So I hope to just remove the outer crank all together. I removed the crank arm, and got to where it looked like I was going to be able to remove the desired chainring but it has these funny nuts and bolts on it. That dont look like any tool was ment to remove them. The bolts have a circle where you would use a tool to unscrew it and the nuts look like they were pressed flat. Has anybody else ran into this problem, and if so what do i need to do in order ti fix it. Any suggesting would be great thanks in advance.

Typically, chainrings are held on one of two ways: 5mm bolts, or non-removable rivets.

If the rings are really held on with bolts, then just use a 5mm Allen wrench to loosen them. The flat nuts on the back may spin, but usually friction holds them in place just enough that you can at least get the bolt a little loose before you finish removing it by hand.

well thanks for the advice, I took it to the LBS and they said I happen to have one of those crank sets where you cant remove the chainrings, its all one piece. Thanks anyway. I guess I'll have to replace them too.

So my next question would be what do I have to look for when finding a replacement. Are there sizes to the cranks or is it one size fits all.

The length of the crank arms should be stamped on the back of them somewhere. Most likely, they're 175mm, so go with that same length when buying new ones.

You may want to consult the shop guys about options. I'd like to say, if it uses a square-taper bottom bracket, just look for square-taper arms, but occasionally the width of the bottom bracket spindle can be too wide or narrow for the new cranks.

Also, you may want to just pick up a brand-new crankset, and they usually include the bottom bracket with them nowadays.

I have found the new cranks that I want to buy they are Shimano SLX M665 Double Cranksets. Will I need a new frontderailer to install these? Where do i find the BB shell size on my bike? Thanks agian for the help.
