FYI, Nobby Nic 29x2.6 fit with room to spare. I posted a video on instagram under #pivotswitchblade and #schwalbenobbynic. Mounted to the stock aluminum 25id rim.

Finally got my x2 rear shock back from Fox and picked the bike up today. Had to go for a ride right away. I also swapped out my fox performance dropper for the kashima coated dropper and looks dead sexy.

I also did my first attempt at Drone footage and captured a few buddies bombing down the hill. Shot with my new dji mavic pro.

Would like your opinions on the switchblade 29er. Been reading the forums and I am ready to pull the trigger on a large 29er setup. However, I've read so many threads about low bottom bracket and I am concerned. I ride mid west trails which are not real smooth, rocky and lots of roots. Constantly climbing and descending. I hardy ever have pedal hits on my 2013 scalpel 29er (large) but frequently do on my 2008 cannondale rush 26". I am 6' tall and weight 180....long torso. I don't plan to ride the 27.5+ version, will stick with 29er. Does anyone have some real feedback on the 29er pedal strikes. I am hoping this is not as much of a problem on the 29er.

Ok, I'll start this by stating that I don't own a Switchblade yet, but I'm also getting one. At the demo I attended, I rode the 29er with the 27.5+ spacer in the bottom of the headtube. I think this helped a lot with pedal strikes and it didn't feel awkward at all to me in how the bike fit or performed. When I buy mine, I'm gonna request the spacer to be installed.

I believe the spacer comes installed regardless of tire size. I'm running 29er/150mm/no spacer. I don't find pedal strikes to be an issue although my pedals look a little beat up. The SB BB is sort of lowish, but not super low. The bike was developed on South Mountain and PA, both very rocky areas. With the newer lower/slacker bikes I had to learn to focus a little more because I've been spit over the handle bars if I drop one of my pedals when coasting but the trade off when going downhill is worth it to me. Also, if I set the suspension too soft with resulting mid stroke wallowing, I'll get more strikes. It's not a foo foo bike and frankly I could make do with the Trail, but the SB is much more fun in the chunk to me. And there is a lot of chunk where I ride.

Spacer was not installed when I purchased with 29er wheelset. I did bump fork up to 160mm and pedal strikes are minimal even with 27.5 wheelset I built. Live in Eastern Pa and in my area particularly is known for crank arm bashing no matter the bike make. The 160mm w/o spacer works very well for me and balances it out nicely.

agreed. that is also how i ran mine. no pedal strike issues

Definitely not installed and never installed it as well as my friends SB bought as 29er but anothers did as 27.5. On another note installed 4th spacer in X2 more subtle on top and needed more bottom out and can run less air pressure.

Sounds like my options are 150mm fork without spacer, 150mm fork with spacer, or 160 mm fork with or without spacer. Is the 160mm fork even an option when purchasing the bike per Pivot options? Most of my riding is southern Indiana single track up/down, rocky and roots. No real big drop offs other than the occasional rock garden boulder sections that are challenging. However, I do want to make a trip to Asheville NC and Colorado next summer. Also seriously considering the 1x12.

I like that option, so I assume when I order my bike from my LBS, I specify the LBS to convert to 160 or will Pivot do that? What was the up charge for the cartridge?

Today was my second day demoing a Large, XO1 Eagle equipped SB.

My thoughts:

Day 1, I spent some time setting up the bike. It had the aluminum DT Swiss 27.5+ wheels. I'm 6'2.5" and 210lbs. Ready to ride with a very full Camelbak, I'm probably 225. I ended up with 215 psi rear and 65 psi front. I did 15.5 miles with 1900 feet of climbing and similar descending. Tacky trail with a lot of chunk, ups and downs and switchbacks. St. George Utah area.

Started off and immediately noticed my left calf was brushing the seat stay on every stroke. Spent a few moments and decided this was the fault of my tight knees pedal stroke. It didn't take long to teach myself to open up my knees a bit more and this solved the problem. The bike pedals really well. Very little to no noticeable bob. I kept looking to make sure the shock was fully open (I never used the trail setting or the lockout, I firmly believe that a good suspension design doesn't need it. I was correct). If I had more time or if this bike was mine, I would like to keep playing with the suspension settings, regardless, I was impressed. I was definitely getting pedal strikes though. Enough that it was throwing off my confidence in climbing techy sections. I had to explode into them so that I wouldnt' have to pedal and if I didn't carry enough speed, ratcheting was involved. Very disconcerting. I never felt like the plus size tires gave me any advantages. No more (or less) grip over rock or in loose corners. The back of the bike kept getting hung up on square edge rocks and it felt really slow to accelerate. The biggest issue I ran into was that I actually tagged the chainring/chain on rocks three different times. I think this was in part because I was trying NOT to pedal through chunk and with the pedals level, the chainring paid the price.

Now day 2. I set the bike up with the DT Swiss aluminum 29er wheels. I DID NOT remove the 17mm lower cup (as an aside, it does not come installed on the bike, this is a choice your LBS makes).

I returned to the same trails I rode the day before. Conditions were unchanged.

I immediately noticed that the bike rolled faster. Better acceleration and just smoother overall. I did feel like the bike sat much higher. This was proved by fewer pedal strikes. By fewer, I mean MUCH fewer, as in almost non-existent. I had to build my confidence back up when approaching rocky climbs. My body memory from the day before was telling me that I was about to tag my pedals but I wasn't. I even tried to pedal hard through sections where I knew the 27.5+ had failed and was pleasantly surprised to blow through them unscathed. It was a completely different bike. Now the downside. The front end was pretty floppy with the big wheels and headset spacer. It felt a bit heavy side to side. If I let go with one hand to wipe my brow or adjust my glasses, the bike would very quickly turn. I spent the ride teaching myself to hold the bike steady. Now, this was really only on climbs. Flats, or downhills weren't an issue. To me, it is something that I would be willing to trade off in exchange for the lack of pedal strikes, increased speed and greater confidence.

To sum up. I cannot recommend the 27.5+ set up for this bike. It didn't work...for me. I just don't see any advantages. The 29er beat it out in every way. Technical, climbing, descending, speed and confidence. I wouldn't give up any one off those.

Bike shop installed mine got the Rc2 cartridge forgot to mention that for finer tuning, not cheap about 300.00. Do not believe Pivot offers set at 160mm but if you want to keep Fit cartridge its just removal of a spacer by bike shop or can do yourself if your mechanically inclined.

I got my X2! Too sick to ride now[emoji22]

The Rekons have a smallish diameter. Although they made my bike feel a little more poppy than my Cruxs or Trail Bosses, I did feel I got more strikes. More so than my 29er/no spacer set up.
