Doesn't make it a bad bike. I have a large that may well end up there too. It's a fantastic bike but it just doesn't fit for what I do. I thought I wanted the longer travel but turns out the 116mm of the Trail suits me best. Tells me I'm getting old!

 

Can anyone tell me if the fox 36s come with a 15mm qr axle or a 20mm bolt through?

When talk goes to sizing the one measurement that seems to get over looked is your ape index (wing span, shirt sleeve length, whatever). When your height makes you a tweener, the deciding factor could be your ape index. I'm 6'2" and I have to have at a 37" sleeve on my dress shirts. So when a large may seem like a solid option, it generally feels too short because of my reach, unless I go old school with a 110mm stem.

Just another fly to throw into the what size frame should I get question.

 

Agreed, as good as the SB is still a production frame,meaning not custom built to fit. I have had several frames built to fit and it is perfection but the ability to adapt to said production frames allthough risky at times can be accomplished through due diligence,expierence and lets not forget some voodoo too ! (-; I am very pleased with medium fit,a setback SP literally icing on the cake for fit. heading to Killington Vt this weekend for Enduro with Mtn tamer + size wheelset to get me some!

Teaser pic of my new switchblade. I upgraded the shock to the x2 and trying to locate some 800mm bars. Also working on upgrading the dropper to the factory kashima version. I go in tomorrow and help with assembly and then take it home. Can't wait to ride this beast.

Sweet,my X2 should be in this week,friend of mine is breaking/setting up his X2 past few days,huge improvement in performance over Evol in his opinion. Will take his word he is a head mechanic with LBS Pivot dealer and Fox certified sevice center mechanic. Will pimp off of him to set mine up!

 

Sorry I dont fully understand I thought t hey used the same spindle so you could just put the arms on the spindle that comes with the bike. Is that not correct with the G4 or is it different?

So then the new G4s do fit or did u get what was spec'd from pivot which I thought was the older next SL

 

I believe if you by the G4 aftermarket you need a special axle length. I was going to swap the SixC from my 429T by changing the axles but never got around to it.

Not mounting untill my pal brings extra volume spacer.Fox site claims that three are installed at factory but my friend had only two in and added two more,don't get that luxury coming from Pivot. If I have time will remove canister and look see,will add one more if two only.

i actually called fox to order spacers they told me the new type are not available for a couple weeks but sent me 2 of the old style for free. The rep also noted that on the small shock, 7875x2, we have to remove the shock and air can all the way to get the spacers in so the new style doesn't really help the same way it does with larger stroke shocks. Interested in your impression of the performance especially since
You won a race on the original shock!

Thats a nice weight,mine has never seen 30. But not a deal breaker for me under 35lb and I'm happy and just under that with + size wheelset running DW tires.

 

Is there any weight difference between the blue frame and the black frame on the same frame size. Thx!

 

Thats seriously not a concern,so slight as to be an non issue for a bike of this caliber.

 

Do any of you guys know if you can convert a standard Boost rear hub (i9) to Super Boost to fit the SB? I've seen kits online to convert a 142 to Boost, but not Boost to Super Boost.

As far as I researched no,I went with a Sram XO DH 157mm,good price and works mint.

 

FYI frame with rear brake, headset and x2 shock is just over 8lb weight.

Ok Guys and Gals,
I am in the 429 Trail vs Switchblade dilemma. I have read this thread as well as another similar thread(Mach6 vs Switchblade vs 429 Trail) and I am torn. I ride mostly technical singletrack. Short up and short downs. I like to do all day rides. I did the BC Bike Race this year, loved it, and want to do more stage races. I also do maybe one enduro a year as well as hit the bike park 2 times per summer. I take several trips to the VA mountains which have more elevation but is still technical. My sensible side tells me that I should get the 429 Trail as it is what I need the majority of the time. but then I would be under gunned for the enduros and the bike park. So my question is: for the type of riding that I do the majority of the time, does anyone who has experience with both feel the Switchblade would be too much bike? I only ask because a lot of the feedback on this thread seems to say that the Switchblade climbs really well. But I don't want to get a big ol bike that feels like a barge going through tight technical trails. My current bike is a Rocky Mountain Altitude 27.5 with 150mm front/rear travel. It honestly does all of the above things well, but I would love some more rollover and the ability to run plus sized wheels. Thanks in advance for the advice.

 

Patapsco and Schaeffer farms - 429T. The Shed/Gambrill - SB, although I ride my 429T there a lot. If you run lightish trail tires and firm up the suspension on the SB you have a slightly slacker version of the 429T. I don't feel my SB is cumbersome on tight technical trails. I have a large 429T and a medium SB. I purchased both from Patapsco bikes. I think they may have a 429T on the floor. As you may know, the closest demo is in GA. Maybe we can hook up at the Shed and you can take one for a short spin.

Got my SB today! Large with a few upgrades, x2 most notably and some wider bars. got the suspension set up best i can in the garage so looking forward to tomorrow. i can say that fit-wise it feels perfect. 150 dropper may be a little long as it won't go down any further but i would rather be too long than too short as i can always drop it down a bit.

Picked up my sb last night and tried to fit a 32 tooth absolute black chain ring but it catches on the chain stay. The race Face 30t chain ring fitted to the bike was fitted with the rung dished in over so teeth closer to the frame than the lock ring. Is this correct? If so guess you can't run bigger than a 32 tooth conventional chain ring or a 30 tooth oval?

 

I have an AbsoluteBlack 32t on my SB. The bike shop installed it... It's a close fit, but I have two rides on it (it's a new bike) and both have been great. It's at the bike shop now getting some upgrades; otherwise, I'd take some photos of it for you. I'll get it back some time next week and can provide additional details then, if you'd like.

 

Here are pics of my 32t Absolute Black cinch chain ring. I did not order the boost version. This was advertised as "Absolute Black Chairnring AbsoluteBlack Oval Direct RF-Cinch 32T RD" when I ordered it.

 

Thanks for that. Mine is catching. I've emailed Pivot to see what they suggest is the biggest chain ring that can be fitted and I'm still awaiting a response.

Did my first ever enduro on mine at the weekend. Every time I ride this bike it blows me away how capable it is as an all rounder. I'm able to get up technical climbs I've never managed in 20 years of riding and that's coming off a mach 429 which I thought climbed well! I'm running with the 17mm headset cup in and forks running at 160mm. I demo'd a 429 trail and Ripley LS before this was released, nearly bought the ripley but hung on to try it in an XL and then this was released. Boy am I glad I waited!!! For me it's my ideal all day, all terrain ride.

Friend of mine has a 34t non oval on Next Sl crankset. My understanding is 34t is max fo SB.

 

Yes, 34t is max for a 1x setup AND you need to be sure to order a Zero offset ring. Wolftooth has them in stock if you want to try upsizing.

Beachbum- SB 29er for stage races / longer faster paced rides 27+ for enduro racing / park and gnarly trails. Just shell out for both wheelsets.

 

chainring.....so i noticed the shop that built my bike didn't flip the chainring...per the pivot website it should be. if they used spacers doesn't that affect how well the crank performs??

DrDon, that's exactly the advice I am looking for! I ride Patapsco most of the time since it is 20 minutes from my house. I ride in Roanoke a few times a year where my brother lives. I also want the bike to go to Bryce as I go there several times a year as well. A full on DH rig is a bit over gunned for what I do there. Thanks for the offer to ride. Wilks, that's a great idea about the wheelsets. I think that is what makes me lean towards the SB is the ability to switch wheelsets and keep the geo and bb height similar. I have read of folks having issues with the bb height in the 429 trail when switching to 27.5 plus wheels. I emailed Pivot to see if they were planning on making the same spacer for the SB also applicable to the 429 trail to keep the bb height similar, but never heard back.

 

I saw in the 429 trail forum that somebody put the 17mm headset cup on their 429T to run plus tires. The cup for the SB also fits the 429T

Or you can get 140mm air shaft and raise the front by 10mm.
