i have SR suntour forks on my bike and on one side there is a switch/dial to lock and unlock which works fine but on the other side theres a dial that says preload with +/- and direction arrows. when i turn the dial it either way i dont really notice any difference.

id like to stiffen the shocks up a little if possible as im a heavy rider and they seem to compress quite a bit when im just sitting. what exactly does the preload dial do?

sorry if this is a stupid question i tried a search but couldnt find what i was looking for

The "preload" adjuster is kinda a joke it preloads the elastomer a bit and thats it. As for stiffening up the thing Sorry. I don't see any way that you can compensate further than that just turn it all the way up and hope for the best, that fork kinda fits into that one size fits all category and not really meant for any real rough riding.

yeah i kind of figured they were pretty cheap shocks, im not really expecting much i just dont notice any difference at all. i turn the knob several times each way and nothing

In order to stiffen...

the fork you would need to increase the spring rate. All preload does is increase the intial load on the spring, it does not change the spring rate. All adding preload does is increase the force needed to start spring compression. After the spring starts to move it is still the same rate as it was before. Preload is simply a tool for fine tunning (within a very limited range) the initial sag on an elastomer or coil sprung fork. Bottom line is, if you are too heavy for the current spring/elastomer in the fork, adding preload will do nothing to help.

Good Dirt

Preload only changed the sag position, ie when riding and the max travel down a bit.

Adding preload might get you to a fork that doesn't bottom out as much, you can try adding a few coins under there, if you need more to acheive this.

It'll still move and ride the same though, just with less sag.

You need a stiffer coil, if they do 1, why I stick to air forks despite loving Coil forks, it's just 1 less PITA!!
