My locked 1UP rack was stolen in about 30 seconds

Unfortunately this seems to be the theme of threads these days. Thursday at about 7 AM, video/audio footage showed somebody removing and stealing my locked 1up rack in about 30 seconds with no apparent noise or evidence of cutting, so they must have had a key that worked on my lock. It was locked with the hitch lock that 1up includes with the rack. It was on a busy street in SF with people around. I love 1up racks, but just a heads up that the hitch lock that comes with it cannot be replied upon to even slow down a worthless human being who targets bike racks.

bummer.

this video shows that no key is necessary to defeat these types of locks.

^^^ i like jk-47's u-lock method pictured above; i may add one to my rack for extra insurance.

gdmf bike thieves can go eat a d1ck. same goes for bike rack thieves.:mad::mad:

I'm still unable to understand how people live with themselves after crimes like this, even addicts.
"I lied. I cheated. I bribed men to cover the crimes of other men. I am an accessory to murder. But the most damaging thing of all... I think I can live with it. That MTB rack I stole off a van-lifer van haunts me the most. There wasn't even bike on it... so senseless. The 'Drink Tahoe Brew' sticker makes me feel a little redeemed, that's why I haven't just hanged myself."

Sorry for your misfortune at the hands of others.

I would be loathe to rely upon the locking pin anyways even if I hadn't seen parkmeister's admittedly shocking video. You just have to look up how fast even hardened security chain can be cut with a cordless angle grinder to realize that pin wouldn't even last 15 seconds.

That said, I do have to rely upon a security chain to secure (relatively speaking) my load, and so it does double-duty to secure my rack. It should at least give would-be-thieves some pause.

The biggest headache of this setup is that because it is a pain to thread/unthread the chain though the hitch eyelets, you basically don't remove the chain at all. Which poses a problem since the automatic car wash I use (recall that our region is in a drought) won't allow you in with a bike rack on the back. I had to get a hitch step so that with the hitch rack removed, the chain can be wrapped onto something.

I had friends who live in San Francisco and auto related theft is commonplace (as are muggings). One of them had a Izusu Trooper with the tire mounted on the rear of the vehicle and when he came out of Safeway the wheel was gone. Another friend lived in the Marina district and she had the Blaupunkt radio stolen from her BMW three times. The last time she had put in a Black Bart car alarm and the thief stole the radio and the alarm system.

A cordless angle tool with a $4 cut-off wheel can slice through any lock, any cable, and any chain in seconds. I only put my 1Up rack on the car when I am going to take two bikes somewhere. With a single bike I can fit it inside the SUV with both wheels left on the bike. I have noticed on UK bike forums that many riders use a mini van for transporting their bikes. This would keep the bike(s) out of sight and far less likely to get stolen.

There is a motion detector alarm that has excellent reviews on Amazon and is cheap at $16.49.

If anyone is able to become a politician and bring us back to the proper days of being to end a thieves life, I would vote for you.

Oh and bring back hard labor camps, you just may die of exhaustion and that is also fine.
Right, fascist police states.

Well find out where a lot of these guys are on mtbr and set up shop. There seems to be a plethora of guys here that seem to be understanding of thieves and sympathy for them. Matter of fact, if you see the bike hanging in their locked garage, just ring the doorbell and tell them you need it and ask for the key. Sounds like some of these people will appreciate your honesty and just give you the key rather than breaking their window out. Probably will throw in a helmet, too.

I don't know about Big Bear, but the west side of the mountain doesn't put up with crime. Gas thieves are getting the beat downs now with gas at $5.00 a gallon for 87. And don't run afoul of Twin Peaks Sheriff's. That's a worse beat down.

I have lived in SF for about 21 years now in all different parts of the city. Moving from Las Vegas, it is basically the polar opposite of Vegas in almost every way, so at first I loved the change and contrast and took advantage of many of the things the city had to offer. However, I was kind of over it about 10 years ago and have wanted to move since then, but I have also always kind of felt that to a certain extent the place you live is sort of what you make of it, and thought I would be happy living pretty much anywhere there is access to outdoors since that is where I spend most of my time and you could definitely do worse than Bay Area in that regard. However, IMO SF has become almost uninhabitable the last couple years. Unfortunately my wife absolutely loves it (still trying to understand why!) and she has a business here. However, we don't have kids and she is totally fine with me basically constantly going on day trips / road trips / big overseas trips so I am probably out of SF more than in it and that is the compromise we have come up with. I'm not sure how she is able to let this out of control property crime just roll off her back, but if she ever comes around, we will be out here the next day!

Probably 80% of the racks here in the SoCal spots I ride, especially Aliso Woods, are 1up… A U-lock may slow down a thief with an angle grinder by a few seconds, but maybe they will move onto an easier target that’s literally 10ft away…

The new trend in San Francisco is to break into people's houses to steal bikes:

And in the case of the most recent arrest, both defendants have long rap sheets. Tiller even made headlines in 2016 for participating in a robbery of the Make-a-Wish Foundation at 400 Market St. and stealing — among other things — a scooter autographed by former Giants right fielder Hunter Pence.
Classy.

They caught the Red-Bearded Burglar in Mendocino, but apparently they like their burglars there:
His smile in the patrol car photo came after a deputy told him of a nearby Halloween display that included a red-bearded jack-o’-lantern apparently depicting Evers, Sheriff Matt Kendall told the news blog Mendo Fever.

The sheriff told Mendo Fever that his department had dialed back its search after realizing that the burglar did not seem violent; the alleged shooting, they believed, “was a one-time thing.”

Debating if it is better to remove my rack and store it in my garage when not riding, but I guess I would need to lock it up there too. Would suck to have to mount it every time I ride, and this still does not protect it at the trailhead. Thinking I better check with my renter's policy and see if it is covered, which is not such a big deal, but like my bike, it is not just having to replace it, but the waiting to get a new one that sucks! If I remember right I had to wait 2 months to get one about a year ago, not sure how long it would be now. I still have my old Yakima rack which is beat-up and loose, but I hate to go back to that. One-up could make some bucks if they came out with a reasonably good anti-theft system. Dang... this is depressing, going to go back to watching the 49ers getting their asses handed to them by the Cardinals, which is the lesser of two evils....

Mine is about 20 seconds on and 30 seconds off. I don't leave it on all the time because I don't want it exposed for those reasons and it's obviously something you could get pulled over for, although that is rare. It's just easier to me to take it off and store it.
