That ain't right. Have you taken it apart by chance? Fairly easy to do. However, I can help but think that the toothed plastic spacer is to blame and there's no guarantee it'll go back together for shipment to Shimano for a warranty claim.

It's not hard to take apart/reassemble. It's good to have a pair of lock-ring pliers and a 17mm spanner, but it can be done without them. There are videos on YouTube on how to do it and Shimano's manual is available online. Once the lock ring is off, just pull on the freehub body and it all comes apart.

I have made another video this time under load, this is something what appeared only now after 1500km, before it was completely silent when pedaling.

Going to make a warranty claim.

That is 100% the toothed spacer in the rear hub. Unfortunately, Shimano has no stock until the end of next month, per their tech department. Get your claim in ASAP and get on the waiting list.

Shimano did tell me that the sound does not affect the performance of the hub, so in theory you can still ride it. I disassembled mine and greased it per the instructions somebody else posted above, and reassembled it carefully with the teeth rotated counterclockwise, and my hub is not making the noise at this point (even though some of the spacer's teeth are broken off). I suspect some of the hubs came from the factory with the spacer installed incorrectly.

that noise is something grinding on the teeth. probably the plastic spacer like everyone says. definitely bad regardless.

when i talk about the noise in mine, its a creak or a pop under load, like youd get in a seatpost or stem or bottom bracket.

Xt8120 grinding

I had the xt8120 Enduro wheel with 28 straightpull spokes.
I rode it three times and it was making that grinding noise all the time while pedaling.
I asked a mechanic friend and he told me there were numerous hubs with issues.
I sent it back as defective to the store I bought it from.

Still looking for a Dt Swiss wheel to buy.

**Just my own observation, but I had in the past wheel and hub problems, from many different brands, then I bought many many DT Swiss wheels and never had a problem again, until I bought another Shimano hub.....

** An industry source told me , after I bought the Shimano wheel and it was grinding, that Shimano had actually contracted Dt Swiss to manufacture the microspline hubs. We then joked that perhaps Dt Swiss has a sense of humor and because Shimano made specifications in their contract, that was the problem, because Shimano always has had problems,,, So DT gave them what they specified.. hehe.

If I ever contract DT I would probably listen to them more than tell them.... **

while its unlikely dt has anything to do with these hubs, the dt design is very, very old, and very simple. it has its own problems, but generally, it just works.

likewise hope hubs. they are pawl hubs, like most every other hub, including older shimano, and some DT, but the combination of seals and overbuilding makes them just work.

rewind back to 1995 though when those were both fairly new, and youll hear a lot more gripes.

shimanos design is new, and its going to go through a number of iterations before we stop having complaints - this is already version 2. hopefully it doesn't take more than version 3 to sort out

This all reminiscent of the Shimano hubs breaking pawls issues about 10 years ago. I'll use their brakes but no more hubs, well maybe a front hub but that's it.

Was that when the torque from larger (then, my how things have changed) 36t cogs were braking the freehubs? I never cracked one, but did have it loosen up on me. Disassembly and torquing down with a 14mm did the trick then (for me).

That was one of many excuses tossed about, I think Shimano actually blamed it on heat treat in the end, definitely not a looseness issue. Fixed once and broke almost immediately. I'm a clyde so may have hastened the failure but many had it happen over a range of Shimano hubs. The only other hub that failed similar was a jumping/dirty flea by sun ringle, that was looseness but the thrust sleeve spacing seemed incapable of keeping the pawls engaged, just a bad design which didn't last long, reviews were like low 2's but it came on the bike.

shimano off road hub have always been held in low regard. there's a reason for the hundreds of aftermarket hub makers, and it wasnt just for flashy colours and lighter weight.

The new hub design put them back on par or better than anything else - they just need to make them reliable now.

something interesting is that the mt400 hubs (deore microspline) are a conventional large diametre pawl hub, like a hope, or dt 370, novatek, formula (everyone). its heavy as hell though.

Hi Guys

As I wrote somewhere above or below! I had at XT rear wheel on which the free hub failed. I ordered the wheel via AMAZON PAY so did not get a clear receipt. Anyhow the SHOP are disputing the failure!.

In the meantime I bought the cheapest 'donor hub' possible... SLX 7100 and switched out the freehub mechanism. Now the bike is working well - the hub pickup at power on is good and freewheel is silent.

I'm happy as the Autumn weather is good- and I'm riding, but unhappy I've shelled out 50 notes for a quality issue.

Any idea what I should do??. Direct to shimano with full explanation which seems the easiest path.

.... Also I left v. weak plastic the finger washer in (which supposedly facilitates the Sylnce feature) Should I take that out. It got mashed up in the original hub... so maybe it will get mashed up again.

Thanks in advance for any advice...

go direct to shimano in the country it came from. they should honour it. it gets tricky if you bought form a different country and try to get support form the country you are living it.

One more case!

First of all, thanks to all the participants of this thread. I came here while searching for a solution on this matter, and the thread helped a lot!!!

My case. Merida One-Twenty 9.7000 (2020 model) with factory installed DEORE XT 148x12 (FH-M8110-B) rear hub. Started creaking after ~500 km of use and increased further.

I've just done what Shimano advised to nbb10, and the problem has been immediately solved. Let's see how it lasts.

I've summed up everything in a Youtube video (crediting this thread in the description for sure!), cause I couldn't find anything relevant there with "shimano XT hub creaking" search string. Hope it helps some new owners.

I took delivery of a new salsa blackthorn around 3 weeks ago. Comes with SLX drivetrain and SLX hubs. They've been great for the first approx. 170km I've tracked with strava but then the rear started developing a nasty creaking noise. I took bike to shop and they took apart and greased it and it was silent again. Went for a ride yesterday, about 7km of rail trail then into single track forest. About 2km into the single track ride I ratcheted my cranks to clear a small log then the hub started acting up. It was engaging and disengaging under pressure, spinning half a turn at times before getting engagement and making some not very nice grinding sounds (I'm thinking it was trying to partially engage). I pedalled very gently to keep it engaged and hopefully not slip to limp home. I had it act up a couple times on my way back down the rail trail but then it held ok and I took bike to shop. They looked at it and tried to re-create the slipping but it stopped doing it. I guess I'll ride it again until it acts up but I'm lacking confidence in it as yesterdays ride got cut short and if its an intermittent issue who knows when it flares up again.

Hi everyone! i get registered, like many others, for leave a comment in this thread. About my experience with this awful shimano hub tech, i build my new bike from scratch, 2x12 XT drivetrain was the choice. Just for reliability is why i choose SLX as rear free hub, FH-M7110 (142 old).
I experienced all the scenarios mentioned above: first rides with intermittent buzz, then creaking when brute force applied (climbing for example), and finally body freewheels to both sides. I should mention that i had only ride the bike 5 or 6 times, 150 kms as much, maybe a little of abuse since every ride was in the trails. Really disappointed.
I will claim for a warranty, there is just a month since i bought it.

Warranty replacement hub x2

Just had two FHM8110b replaced under warranty , on the third in 8 months . The new hubs plastic teeth spacer is completely covered in grease unlike the originals, as posted in the update service.

Hopefully I can spend more time riding than repairing hubs from now on.

Thanks everyone for the feedback on the thread. Put a copy of the thread in with the claim.

Cheers Ted

Hi, Ted! Thanks for sharing, nice to know. Initially they were shipping the hubs absolutely dry, yeah. And it looks there's a plenty more grease applied on your photo than what Shimano advises in their official manual 
