Mount Shimano I-SPEC EV shifter using SRAM brake lever clamp - How To

If you have a Shimano 12-speed shifter (SL-M9100, SL-M8100, SL-M7100 or SL-M6100) with I-SPEC EV mount but you don't have compatible Shimano brakes nor do you have an appropriate adapter (for example Problem Solvers Mismatch 2.2 MMX to ISPC2 adapter for mounting on SRAM brakes), here's a possible interim - or final - solution.

You can mount an I-SPEC EV shifter using a common SRAM brake lever mounting clamp. Like this...

Image

If you don't have one, these clamps are ubiquitous and every bike shop has a few lying around after installing SRAM MMX matchmakers for customers.

This clamp matches the I-SPEC EV semi-circle spacer's radius perfectly, almost like they were made for each other. However, the Shimano spacer is just a tad wider than the gap in the SRAM clamp. This is where a small amount of work with a metal file comes in. Remove a tiny amount of anodizing and metal on either side of the SRAM clamp, and I mean tiny. Less than 2 minutes gentle work with a fine tooth file is enough. Below is the clamp after filing.

Now fit the I-SPEC EV spacer through the SRAM clamp in the position and orientation required...

..and attach to the shifter.

Here is a bike using a SRAM MMX Matchmaker for Guide RE brakes and GX Eagle shifter.

The Shimano 12sp shifters are a bit larger and clunkier than their SRAM Eagle counterparts.

And here is the Shimano I-SPEC EV 12sp shifter installed using the SRAM clamp next to a SRAM Guide RE. The brake is still installed using a MMX Matchmaker clamp, hence the extra bolt and mounting bracket. But you get the idea. Not the prettiest install in the world but it will do for a while (or forever).

This is very interesting. I'm looking for a way to mate a 12-speed slx shifter to a Code brake but no luck so far.
This comes close, but the clamp is facing the other side. I guess that using your method with the brake lever will result in a shifter pointing way up, right?
To add to this post...why didn't (unless it doesn't work of course) you just mount it to the Sram matchmaker clamp on the brake lever? That's the whole point. Yes? The matchmaker is the same on both sides, so unless there is a limit on the angle of the shifter...???

The clamp is not symmetric, the angle is limited. That’s most likely the reason.

I have the clamp-style shifter and paradoxically by looking at it it seems easier to fit on the SRAM clamp than the I-spec EV version.
My idea is to cut the upper part of the clamp and attach the remaining part to the MMX piece turned upside down. I have the impression that with some dremel work it could work.
I’d like to try but I first need to find a spare clamp in case it does not work.

Also if anyone (Problemsolvers?) is working on producing such an adapter, it’s probably easier to do it for the clamp style shifter. You can simply unscrew the clamp and screw a new adapter that goes to the brake, this gives more geometric freedom rather than an I-Spec EV->MMX bit.

Hi rete,
This is an awesome discovery and some spectacular evidence. My huge respect goes to you. I am going to do the same immediately, unless...
In your starting post at the top you say "...unless you have a ...Mismatch 2.2 MMX to ISPC2 adapter". Does this mean that this adapter would accommodate ISPC EV shifter just as well as ISPC2 one? Is the rectangular loop mount on the shifter itself very similar between the two standards? Have you checked this yourself?
Many thanks!

Problem solvers MisMatch works ok.
I have a Shimano XT12 shifter matched to sram Guide levers. used Mismatch 2.2

the range of motion is not very big (quite limited left-right adjustment) but angle range is just fine. work ok for me.

will try to attach a pic tomorrow.

Thanks heaps, Oren.
I am most interested in left-right adjustment as my thumb knuckle keeps bumping into the up-shifting trigger on my 8100 XT shifter, clamp-mounted next to G2 brake lever.

Can you show in your picture if the end of your up-shifting trigger reaches outwards farther than your grip inner end?

Thanks

Does shimano make an actual adapter for this very thing, or is this something you have to do if you’re wanting to upgrade to non-shimano brakes and your bike currently has the shimano brake/shifter I-spec EV setup? I currently have the XT 8100 shifter mounted to the XT 8100 brake lever, but I’m wanting to switch to Hayes dominion brakes. I’d like to not have to buy a new shifter with a bar clamp, and this is the only issue keeping me from getting the new brakes.

Okay, an update from me.
I have a 8100 xt shifter with clamp mount sitting outwars from my G2 R brakes. This way the shifter is too far outwards (towards the grip) which makes my thumb knuckle punching the upper trigger. Not nice at all. Moving the clamp on the inside (between stem and brake clamp) makes the shifter sitting too far from my thumb so shifting becomes a stretch.
I thought following the topic-starter method would help bringing the shifter farther out towards the grip if mounted on the inside from the brake clamp - well, it did not. See the pictures for proof.
The i-spec EV m8100 shifter mointed on MMX clamo sits at exact same position in relation to the grip as the standard Shimano clamp-mounted m8100 shifter. No gain.
With the TS method, there is no room for righthside movement, and the MMX clamp cannot be mounted on the right from the brake clamp as it throws out the shifter angle making it unusable.

Adding to this thread as it helped me.

As stated above the Problem Solvers MisMatch 2.2 works & you can get it to a comfortable set up. But if you have short fingers/thumb it moves the shifter paddles further forward than the OEM sram shifter positing (slightly harder to reach).

Sram shifter^

Shimano shifter^

The MisMatch mount also doesn't fit 100% to the 12spd shimano ispec EV shifter mount (see photos), but this isn't a problem just something to take into account (may break off easier in a crash then a properly fitting set up)

Fully tightened to the problem solvers mount ^

Also the supplied MisMatch bolt is slightly too short & the bolt head fouls on the top of the shifter. the correct bolt needed is a Button head M5x0.8mm pitch with a12mm long threaded section (10mm works but is on the edge of being too short)

Another thing to note as the ispec ev mounting bracket is kinda big & there is no cut out on the sram brakes to accommodate this, the rotation adjustment is kind of limited. You end up with a largish gap between the brake lever & the shifter, but again this isn't a big deal but something to note.

Lastly the adjustment left & right seems to be fully useable which is good.

Ăšltimo con el texto modelo.

Gracias x el dato!!! Yo también tengo ese problema y estoy buscando ese adaptador. Me puedes decir dónde lo compro? O si puedes adjuntar un link para comprar. Soy de Perú.
