What StiHacka said. I should edit my post; 18psi is my lowest regularly run PSI. 20 is typical, 25-30 feels like too much. 18 does not feel squirmy on dirt.

I'm 170-175 with full kit on.

We're not really far off then, especially considering that my local trails are largely sharp-edged crumbled limestone.
My default pressure is 22 rear in a 2.25, and 17 front in a 2.4, and I can drop a couple psi w no problem if conditions are nicer.

Hi guys,

Future HDR650b owner needing some help. I've read almost 8 pages of this thread but i couldn't find enough info to be sure about the size of the frame i should have. I'm 2 hours close to make the payment and, for the moment, i have opted for an L size.

the thing is, i'm 5'8" and 185 lbs with a 31.5 insem.

I currently own a Specialized Pitch Pro, which is a size M(17.5 inch ST, 23.1 ETT and a 17.55 reach) -> I find it too small(read cramped) with the stock 65 mm stem, not being able to use a 50mm one.

The M size HDR has a 17 inch ST, a 23.1 inch ETT and a very short 15.3 inch reach. I cannot test one so, I will be ordering "blind". That is why i've decided to go for an L size(19", 23.8", 16.1").

But, reading until pg. 8, from what i could tell, no one is sizing up. Although, some testers(journalists) said on their reviews to size up...I'm not really sure if I'm going in the right direction.

I do need to mention that, on my current bike the seat-post, from the ST until the actual seat, has a length of 7.09 inch; that means, after using my junior high calculation, even with a longer ST(19")i would still have enough room to use a 100mm or a 125mm dropper post.

Please do advise because I'm just waiting for the final confirmation on the order and, after that, i should proceed and pay for the bike. It is expensive(but worth it IMO) and I wouldn't want to throw with my money on the wrong size.

Looking forward for your replies.

With best regards,
E.

Im 5'9" and i went with a medium. Im using the stock stem which i think is 70mm.

I test rode the medium with 70 mm stem and a large with a 50 or 55mm stem. I really didnt find there to be a huge difference and felt i would be fine on either but ultimately felt the medium was a slighty better fit for me.

From what I've read, people are sizing up from other brands. At 5' 5.5", I typically ride a small for other brands, but for my HDR, the medium with 50mm stem fits me like a glove. I could probably even go with a 60mm and max out at 70mm. I have a coworker, that's 6' 3" and went with an XL. I would think a Large and short stem would work best for you.

BTW, my coworker got the Competitive Cyclist feature XT build for $3500.

Pretty good deal in my opinion, assuming you aren't lusting for the upcoming 150mm Ibis.

You are right in between sizes - I have similar dimensions and went with a medium becaus i like more flickable/compact bikes - that said I'd be lying if I wasn't eagerly anticipating the longer top tube of the HDX?

Hi Eugen,
I'm 5'9 and run a size Large HDR with a 55mm stem. It's great in every way :) I also have a 31,5" inseam, and run a KS-Lev 125mm. I run it slammed to the seattube, but could get away with running it 1/2" higher as well.

E -

I've got your answer: Size up. DEFINITELY size up.

The HD/HDR is a full size too small. A large HDR is comparable to many brand's mediums, and even smaller than many of the new medium bikes (such as Santa Cruz Nomad, Kona, Orbea).

I'm just a little over 5' 8" and ride a large HDR. Now granted I run a very short (35mm) stem and wide bars (780mm) but a large is perfect. I can't imagine anything smaler.

I think you will find the the new HDR when it is released soon will be a size larger -- the reach is said to be an extra 20mm.

this is the bike i am currently buying. at the former price, i could not touch it but, with this sale to make room for the new 150mm 'enduro' model, it is the perfect opportunity; + my Pitch Pro has 160 in front and 150 frame and for 70-80% of my riding time, those 150/160 mm suspension are unused -> the second reason for which i am buying the HRD is the shorter 130/140 mm suspension.

Incredible bike.

I recently switched mine from 26/160 to 650b. It was amazing before -- now it is just off-the-charts great. I am a full 27.5/650B convert.
Eld. no, I do not need any more convincing - I'm already sold - I just wish that CC answer a little faster so that i can make the transaction. It is late(almost midnight) here and I would like to get some sleep; tomorrow, almost 4000 ft of vertical climbing awaits me(spread over a roughly 30 miles course) on a beautiful natural mountain trail).

jon - nice wheels :D i would try and put the enduro mavic tires on the stans flow, when the bikes arrives; the alternative would be an ardent(maybe HRII) in front and a nobby nic for rear. Not really sure what other good option is there for the HRD rider.

I love the Mavic Enduro wheels. Great match for the HDR 650b.
The Mavic tires are good too (especially the front) but they come with the wheels.
If I were buying tires I'd likely go with Maxxis HR II 2.4 in front and Ardent 2.25 in rear.
I know the Ibis guys like the 2.3 Minion DHF on their HDRs.

Oh, i didn't know that this mavic tires only comes with the enduro wheels. I presumed that you can just buy them an put them on your bike, despite the fact you don't have those enduro wheels.

I have taken a ride of 25 miles on a friends bike that had DHFs...on the top of the mountain, raining 80% of the time...right to the moment when small streams formed across and down the trail..and the DHFs were amazing but..., excepting situations similar to that one, they are way to heavy for the usual 30-40 mile loops that me and my friends usually do.

Probably the safest bet is HRII with Aredent(or, the lighter option: Ardent with Nobby Nic).

anyway, thanks for your reply and feedback; and, by the way, excepting the wheels, i want to set-up my bike similar to yours(no CCDB shock though - it would a pain in the proverbial if I would have to send it to the states every time it would broke), the diff being a Pike(150mm reduced to 140mm) and a Monarch Plus RC3, (probably) 50mm stem and not 35 and 760mm wide bars.

You CAN get the tires on their own. I just meant I'm running them since they came with the wheels.
As for the fork, I'd highly recommend trying it out first at 150mm before lowering it. To me, and I think you'll find many many others, 150 in front is the sweet spot for this bike in 650b.

wouldn't that rise the BB too much?(at least, this what i've read)

it is 01:14 am at my side, in 5 hours i need to get up and prepare to leave towards the mountains for this weekend's 30 mile loop with my friends(with only 4-5 hours of sleep, I'm gone be left for dead :( ) but, i have placed the order on one piece of fine carbon fiber low altitude flying machine:

Ibis Mojo HDR 650b
Size L
XT brakes(180 f, 160 r)
XT shifters
XT derailleurs(11-36 cassete, 26/38 chain-rings)
Race Face Evolve - 750 mm bar
Race Face Turbine - 50 mm stem
Stans Flow EX with Conti Mountain King 2.4
Fox Float 34 ctd adjust w/kashima and Fox Fload ctd adjust factory w/kashima
+ a CC 40, some Moab Lizard Skins, a Fizik Tundra2 and an RF Evolve seatpost(which will be promptly changed with a RS reverb dropper

future up-grades: carbon bars, 1x10(with a range extender 40T), a Pike in front and a RC3 in the back.

No pictures, it just has been ordered but, they will follow as soon as the shipment arrives.

Having said that, thank you all for your replies that helped me decide on the matter that counted the most, the frame size.

With best regards,
Eugen

I have OFFICIALLY joined the Ibis team!! Just finished building this tonight. Ready to ride it tomorrow. This is my future-proof replacement after my GT Force was stolen from my garage in July. Hope to keep this bad mother for a very long time.

Hi guys. Can I put a front fork with 120mm or 130mm travel on ibis mojo HDR 650b. I will use it as all around trail bike, weekend warrior and some century ride with no aggressive riding. Thanks.
