This spoke thing kept bugging me. I unlaced my rear and took another look. The offset is so subtle that it's in the shadows. I shifted everything over one spoke and now it looks better, how about that. Will definitely pay more attention if I do another set some day.

View attachment 1247301 The original CC IL is still working it seems despite its lack of servicing though i'm thinking of swapping to a fox dpx2 if I can locate one at a price I don't wince at.
I sent my CCDBIL in to Garageworks suspension for an upgrade. CC and any licensed CC service center will upgrade your internals for free on the IL shock. I paid extra for the new upgraded air spring & the black shaft (purely cosmetic. Does not affect performance). I'm amazed at the changes n the shocks performance. Incredibly softer and more controlled. Just throwing an option out there. Enjoy

Do you mean you upgraded your Inline to an IL? Everything I've read does say the DB Air IL was good upgrade from the Inline. I took the IL off my HD3 and put it on a diffrent bike and went to an X2 on the HD3. Not because the DB shock was bad, it works quiet well, but because it's not user rebuildable. Ive yet to find parts for it.

One thing to note on the IL, it does not tune like the Inline. The settings are not the same.

I've recent found I have CC authorised suspension specialist nearby but I don't think we can get the free IL AIR upgrade here in blighty as their website lists the change as costing 100UKP (or thereabouts) That's on top of a service cost for the DBIL :/. I'm clear on the advantages the IL AIR has over the original DBIL ? is there a good comparison summary anyone? my search sofar hasn't really turned up much beyond its new therefore better journo stuff.

Lots of info on the DBIL in this thread. https://forums.mtbr.com/ibis/cane-creeks-new-db-air-[il]-shock-1031994-2.html

Ta, missed that thread. Hmmm wonder if its worth saving the upgrade cost for something else though looking at the options the only other shock that looks like a feasible option is the DPX2. That way I'd have a spare for swapping in when getting one or other serviced (that would let me get around to doing that instead of just abusing them).
I ran a Fox Float CTD with the Avalanche SSD mod on my V1 Ripley. A considerable improvement over the original DBInline for sure. Might be a option for you than forking out the cabbage for a new DPX2. Float CTD and RP23 SSD Modifications

Amazing how a 5yr old bike can still look relevant today. So many other brands do not. It helps Ibis still uses the same basic design, of course.
When you think about it all the last ten years have brought about are a couple of degrees of head angle slack. And that means that for, say, 98% of users out there a ten years bike would work stellar on any trail. And indeed my wonderful HD3 still does and it is still way more capable bike than the rider driving it

Careful. The offset can fool you because if you look at the rim bed, the offset can be slightly to one side, but the drilling can be directional and point to the opposite side. You should drop a spoke and nipple into the spoke hole and move the spoke towards one side of the hub then the other. If there is directional drilling, the spoke will move further in one direction and that is the side of the hub that the spoke should go to--even though the offset of the spoke hole is slightly to the other side of the hub.

I had a stubby branch kick up and jam solidly into the rear triangle behind my chainring over the winter. The wood was hard enough that it crushed a small area and propagated a crack. Ibis was super cool about helping me out and still had a replacement non-boost swingarm, with one caveat. Can you guess what that was? :)

Glad to have this trail ripper back in action. The lower pivots were pretty frozen up, so replaced that link, which made a nice difference in rear end compliance. Added a Works -1 headset as well. Loving this bike still! Getting lots of people saying that they like the new color scheme. Jury is still out on whether a green DVO or red Lyrik would look better up front, lol.

was it free?

Keeping the HD3 alive.....(can't get photo to upload, but I'll get there)

Prior to this I had Fox X2, Pike RCT3, GX Eagle Drivetrain, Hope/Chinese Carbon wheels and DHF/DHR tires. I've since replaced almost everything but the frame, bar, dropper, saddle, pedals.

here is the new build with a few comments on each

Frame: 2017 HD3 with Cane Creek DBAir IL Love this shock. The climb lever is great and works.
Fork: MRP Ribbon 160mm Super supple off the top compared to the Pike, but I do kind of miss the trail mode. A bit of my energy is sapped on even with LSC 100% firmed up. But I really like the feel. Way smoother into travel than my pike and 200g lighter.
Headset: King Inset 2 Silver Bling
Stem: Race Face Turbine 60mm
Bar: Ibis Carbon 800mm riser
Grips: Ergon GE1, but will be trying WolfTooth Karve Grips
Dropper: Bike Yoke 160mm Best Dropper I've had
Saddle: SQLab 611 Best Saddle I've used. No more numbnuts
Pedals: Time MX8 I love clipless and I love the platform on these. Also great at shedding Mud
Bottom Bracker: Race Face Cinch
Cranks: Race Face SixC 170mm
Chainring: Woltooth 32t Elipitcal I really like elliptical rings and each time I am back on a round ring, I can tell. These seem easier on my old knees.
Cage: Arundel Carbon
Brakes: Shimano XTR Trail/Enduro 4POT Best brakes I've ever used
DriveTrain: Shimano XTR 10-51 WOW. best drivetrain I've ever used. I really never liked Eagle and was waiting until 1x12 Shimano came. I might have gone with XT, but price and wait was killing me.
Dropper Lever: Shimano XTR Dropper Lever I was a Wolftooth fan, but this one works and hooks into the brake levers. Nice.
Wheels: Shimano MT-901 Hubs, Ibis 742 Rims, Sapim Laser Spokes and Sapim Alloy (blue) nipples Digging the Shimano Hubs. Quiet, quick engagement and rolls for days
Front Tire: Bontrager XR4 2.9 These two tires are bit like running the Hans Dampfs front and rear I had on my Ripley. So far so good. Better manners for my less aggressive riding than the DHF/DHR combo. I don't see myself pushing these past their limit. Roll better.
Rear Tire: Bontrager SE4 2.4
Paper Weight: 28.2 lbs.

I almost considered Ibis 735 rims since I'm not sold on the wider is better beyond 30mm, but I like the 742 so far.

So far I love the build. It hauls ass. I do need to dial in the climbing platform a bit. A bit mushy for my liking. Only thing I would change would-be 165 cranks, but 170s work for me and I got a good deal. The new suspension is so much better down than the X2/Pike combo and the Drivetrain blows Eagle away.

I have the same frame and suspension setup, with the fork set at 150 and am very happy also after riding a Pike, a fox 36, and a fox 34.....lots of smiles😊. Enjoy.

Also, I am not a big fan of the lower, longer, Slacker trend; increase downhill ability, and stability at speed.. Sure..

I have tried it, and am sure I would adjust over time...

but it sure is nice to be really happy with your bike and not at all concerned about dropping five or six grand cuz you don't have the latest greatest

I really like the shorter wheelbase ...it's easier to throw around, and the HD3 works just great... for me
