Adding to the mix

My buddy ordered this frame November of 2014; by the time it arrived in July of 2015 he had lost patience and bought a Yeti. In that same span of time, my resistance to the new bike bug was waning, so I took it off his hands the day it arrived... I'm so weak...

Since then it's been a whirlwind of riding, and upgrades, and dialing in, which finally landed me here with this little gem. I've continued to be extremely impressed with the ride quality of the bike itself. I came off of an HD so it was not a huge change, but it feels much, much smoother. My 16 year-old son is stoked too since he gets to ride the HD now, spoiled punk

While dialing in the shock (which, happily, has not given me any problems) I got sick of dealing with the upside-down orientation so I flipped it. I consulted the Oracles at both Cane Creek and Ibis, and was told re-orienting the shock would have no ill effects. It is much easier to access the controls and see if the Climb lever has popped out of position, as it was want to do previously. It never fully engaged, but would fall out of the detent intended to hold it in the open position. It seems to do that less now that it is in this new orientation.

Frame: HD3, Size: Medium, Color: 917 (Classic Porsche colored bicycle? Yes please!)
Shock: Cane Creek DB Inline
Fork: Pike RCT3 160mm Dual Position
Wheels: Easton Arc 30 on BHS hubs
Tires: F: Maxxis Ardent R: Schwalbe Hans Dampf
Brakes: Hope V2
Cranks: RaceFace Next SL
Chainring: One up Oval 32T
Rear Derailleur: XT M8000
Shift Lever: XT M8000
Cassette: XT M8000 11-42
Headset: Cane Creek 40/110 top/bottom
Grips: ESI Chunky
Handlebars: Renthal Carbon Fatbar
Stem: Syntace Mega Force 60MM
Seatpost: Thomson Covert Elite
Saddle: WTB Volt
Pedal: Mavic/Time

If my memory serves me correctly it comes in at about 28.5 pounds, which is lighter than anything I've ever ridden.

I am sure that I am not the first to post this, Got me a Hd3 a couple of weeks ago and in to weeks managed to blow the shock. I have had 3 cc shocks and all of the have given me problems. Coil was the least problematic, CCDB Air seals sucked, Inline seals, and blown in two weeks. I do not have a back up shock and here is the real bummer about CC no one can work on there stuff. The internet has a bunch of inlines and they can not give them away. I heard specialized had major problems with there stuff. If you have one on your bike i strongly suggest getting a back up cause the turn around time is not quick and if you live in the PNW forget them...

You may want to rotate your tires... the Hans Dampf in my experience is the better cornering tire

That is a fair point. I have actually recently changed the tires to F: Maxxis DHF R: Continental Mountain King. I know I love the DHF for front and rear use, but still evaluating the Conti, so far so good though.

I've been interested in the HD3 since it was released and unexpectedly find myself on a leftover 2015 this year since my Intense Carbine 275 frame cracked. Sad about the Carbine as it was a great bike though not the most durable but happy to finally get on one of these. Build is about a half lb lighter than the Carbine at 26lbs 7oz, both frames size small:

Not the super lightest componentry but good build from my Carbine:

Shimano XT 1x11 RD/Cassette/shifter+BB
KMC X11SL gold chain
RF SIXC 170 cranks
OneUp 32t Oval ring
RF Atlas pedals
LB Carbon rims on Hope Pro2 hubs(400g version of rim for AM)
Thomson Masterpiece post (don't care for droppers)
Pike RCT3 Solo Air 150
WTB Rocket Ti rail saddle
Easton Haven stem/carbon bars
CC 40 ZS HS
ESI racer's edge grips
XTR Trail 988 brakes(180f/160r)
Conti MK 2.4f/RK 2.2r tubeless

I'm sure a SRAM XX1 OR X01 drivetrain would save a good amount of weight and possibly get me under 26lbs but that's a decent investment that's not in the budget for this year. Notice a lot of builds here have the Next LP cranks. A lot lighter than my SIXC but are they strong enough for a bike like this?

BTW, CCDB Inline must weigh quite a bit more than fox as this frame alone weighed 6lbs 1oz(no axle or DT guard included) and that's with the direct mount FD adapter removed. Claimed weight for small is 5.6lbs.

Same HA as my Carbine and about 1" more Reach, ETT and WB. Looking forward to riding soon.

Just finished up the build. Three rides on the bike and I'm loving it so far.

Mavic Crossmax XL Wheels-Tubeless
Enve Carbon Fiber 740mm Bars
ODI SDG Grips
XTR shifter
XT 30T M8000 Crankset
XT M8000 Rear Derailleur
XT M8000 Brakes
XT Icetech Rotors
Rockshox Pike RCT 160MM
Cane Creek Headset
Rockshox Reverb Stealth 125mm(KS Lev in picture)
Fizik Tundra seat
HT Components AE02 pedals

Which size rims did you get? the 35 mm? Was thinking of ordering a pair since they are on sale. $155 a rim.
Yep, these: https://www.nextie.net/mountain-clincher-35mm-NXT27AM35

Apparently they have a new website where they are listed for $190? But you can still navigate to the old site and they are indeed on sale for $155. I don't see any difference in specs. No complaints, here, they built up rather easily. Quality seems decent as well although I prefer directional drilling for sure on the spoke holes. Besides angling the spoke holes found on pricier rims the hookless rim bead isn't as thick. 2.5mm vs 3mm for a Derby.

I have the 38 mm lb rims which I love. I want to get something thinner for thinner tires. Can't always run 2.4 tires so figure give these a shot. $155 is cheapest I've seenntoo!

Hello Together,

happy to see so many nice builds here ! I am currently waiting for my frame and thinking about which fork will work best for me.

I have still a 160mm Pike here at home and also could get a good deal on an 150mm Fox 34. Did anybody here try both options (160mm, 150mm) and can give some comments ?

I am coming from an Santacruz 5010 and choose the MojoHD3 because it has the almost same geometry but more rear travel. I really liked the playful geo from the 5010 and was running it with 140mm at front. Therefore I am more towards the Fox34.

Just put some easton haven carbon bars and some fox 36 rc2's on mine.
Pics when i get my new decals. Still deciding what to use

You do know that for about $35 bucks you can get a 150mm air shaft for the Pike and switch back and forth...best of both worlds!

Yep that was my plan. Got the 160mm pike and 150mm air shaft. Funny thing is I've just left it at 160 as find I often use the 140-150mm of travel and nice to have a little bit more up your sleeve.

The girlfriend picked up a Special Blend build on St. Patty's Day. Such a great value with the 1x11 XT drivetrain. It shipped with Arch EX rims too, rather than the Rapids listed on ibis website.

Another thing is that the X-fusion fork stanchions measure 160mm, but the head angle seemed a tiny bit steeper than my SB5. It should be 66.6 on the HD3 and 66.8 on the SB5. But I guess I'd have to use an angle finder to be sure.

When I had an issue after about 3 months, I called Cane Creek directly and the Fed Ex'd me a new shock overnight. They didn't even wait for me to send them my shock first. No issues withe the current shock.

Only got this built up this last week, but with 3 rides I can say that it has exceeded my expectations and then some. Best bike I have owned, hands down.

Most of the parts are pretty obvious except perhaps the Onyx hubs. If you have never heard of these, they have instant engagement and are totally silent when coasting. It's pretty cool to ride around and only hear your tires on the dirt!

I'm enjoying my experiment with the plus tires so far, but may swap over to something skinnier just to compare.

Just finished with the build ! Can't wait to ride it tomorrow for the first time:D
One Thing makes me a bit uncomfortable, the rear end spacing is only 144mm and it's not so easy to get the rear wheel in. It's supposed to be the boost version... But rear disc and brake are fitting.
