I didn't even know it existed until about a week ago...
Can't say enough good things about that book. Lots of great character development. Read it with your partner and it'll change your lives, one way or another. :p

But as much as I love a good Cat 'O Nine Tails as well as the next gent, I came to this thread to see HOT PICS OF HD3 ACTION.

Focus people, FOCUS.

Thanks for posting up some visuals Covy!

@BikeIntelligencer- I finally took the HD3 over to where I demoed the Tracer 275c, as well as other bikes for a better comparison (Miner's Trail loop). Going off memory here, but I didn't think the HD3 gave up anything on the DH to the 275c. I thought it was actually a bit more planted and floated over the chunky parts better. We are talking different forks, shocks and rims. But it just confirmed for me that I got the right bike. As for fit though, I can see with the longer reach the Tracer working better for you.

It could be strictly a sizing issue. The 3 in an L cramps me just a bit and that of course is going to show up more on the DH than climbs. Still waiting to try the XL but I may be classic tweener on the 3.

I've found the opposite to be true for me. I like the feel of a smaller cockpit on steeper, more technical descents and jumps/drops, but that same short cockpit feels cramped and not so good on seated climbs.

Thanks for the sizing observations everyone and thanks for all the action stoke.

Jake at SC set it up for me and it felt perfect. Took Nomads out 4 times trying to dial in sizing. Didn't play with it much and I'm going on memory but think it was over 30, maybe even 35. But that was eyeballing it, the shock was the Vivid, apologies for the lack of clarity. You're asking why? As I say, the bike rode spectacular, climbed better than I expected, otherwise I wd've played around with the settings.
Was just curious to see where other people are liking the setup.

KRob, I found the HD3 frames to run a little bit on the small side, maybe not quite as much as Santa Cruz but still small. At 5'10" I am almost in between a M and Lg myself. I felt with a M I would have had to run a longer stem which I did not want to do. In all actuality the Lg felt really good and can still just get by with a 150 mm dropper. It felt good enough to order one, just playing the waiting game now. At least the weather has been crap here and all the trails are blown out. Actually I would prefer to be riding.

I would say their sizing guide is pretty spot on, although the overlap between the XL and L is interesting. I would say that at the upper limit you would probably be better sizing up just as in the medium.

Sizing Guide (rider height)
Small 152-165 (5'0"-5' 5")
Medium 163-175 (5'4"-5' 9")
Large 175-188 (5'9"-6'2")
XL 183-198 (6'-6'6")

I imagine everybody is too busy having fun riding to stop for pictures! Anybody know a good way to use an iPhone for solo action shots?

I've had the bike a couple weeks now, and even ride seems to get better! Its really a blast to ride. I'm not only PRing my old times, but more importantly having more fun. I really cannot think of any way its not better then my old HD. As for fit, I feel it is spot on for me, and the stock bars and stem feel great. No need to go super wide. Remember how everybody was upgrading their shocks on the HD to get it to feel plusher? Well, no need for that with the DB Inline. Truly a great shock.

If you have a 5/5s/5c, you might take a look at the HITCASE product line. They offer a case with 2 different lenses and various ways of carrying/mounting the iPhone. They also have a iPhone app that overlays distance, speed, shock, g-force and maps on the video.

Shockproof, Waterproof iPhone 5s 5c 5 Case, Compatible with GoPro® - Hitcase.com

I've thought about buying one, but I just haven't pull the trigger...

They look pretty cool. Too bad they don't make one for the 6 yet.

Eager to hear back on your thoughts/impressions. Where will you be riding?
I am 6'2" and 180 pounds. Inseam is 34 inches. My arms are probably a little short for my height. I have a large Ripley and just sold my large Tracer T275C.

Today I rode an XL and a L DH3. In order to get the cockpit's close, we put a 30 stem on the XL and a 70 on the L. There were also 3 spacers on the L and 1 on the XL. (This was actually reversed from the original setup on the demo bikes. I tried them in the LBS parking lot and I felt like Homer Simpson on the clown bike on the L and like I was on a giant toboggan on the XL until we made the switch.)

Fortunately, the rain stayed away I was able to ride Aliso and some of the Whiting trails in Orange County, CA.

I changed my order to an XL after the rides today. They were actually very close, but I felt I had a little more room in the cockpit of the XL without being overly stretched out. The L was just a little cramped. I ran the KS 150 about an inch above the collar on the XL and over 2 inches on the L.
The good news was that neither size put me in the weeds and the longer wheelbase felt a little more stable on the dh without sacrificing playfulness.

Overall, the HD3 is similar to the Tracer but climbs a little better and is a little more flickable. I am sure this is the DW vs. the VPP suspension.

This was also the first time I was able to run the 741 rims and they were awesome! Great traction in some of the "loose over hard" terrain we have in SoCal.

The bikes were both a lot of fun.

One of the things I like about the HD3 is that at 5' 11.5" I'm squarely on a large from all I've read and smack in the middle of their size range for large. It looks like it's a little longer than the 5010 and that would be perfect with a 50mm stem.

Hope to get a demo on one next weekend at the Sedona MTB Festival.

Likewise on sizing. No demo for me though, it'll be sight unseen if the frames ever arrive Down-under, which is not looking likely - at this stage, the importer can't get a whiff of an ETA from Ibis. Nomad is looking closer than ever.

I appreciate this^ and it validates how I thought the differences would be (only had time on a large). Thanks.

For sure if I was under 6', I'd go for the large. As always, I'm curious about your take since you spend some time on lots of different bikes. That said, I'm actually most interested about the comparison between your current 5010 - a la: do you find the HD3 to be a similar pedal'r but with a little more tooth on the descents / do you find the 5010 to be more in the sweet spot for trail bike riding... Won't matter much as I'm already committed to the HD3 but do enjoy opinion and other shared observations.

Some good discussions about the T275c vs HD3. I have a large T275c right now and love it on the DH but for some reason I'm just not enjoying the climbs with it. It just feels sluggish and I feel like it saps more energy out of me then my 66c which weighed about the same. The HD3 seems to offer the perfect set up for climbing and DH which is why I'm intrigued. Though the sizing worries me a little bit as I'm 6'1 210.

So what's the verdict on the HD3's descending abilities? How does it go on fast, steep & rocky? Is the HA sufficiently slack to plow when required or is it more of a peg it back a notch kinda bike? My 65deg Reign does pretty well and there's not been any steeps it doesn't handle. Is the HD3 of the same ilk?
Wrong thread, but i will answer anyway...
look what you guys started...

great idea (thread) turned into this (and a partime 275c sh!t intense (sorry do not like them) vs HD3 thread)...
just because everybody seems to be to lazy to look for the right place to ask his question.
sorry to say but this happens more and more all over the boards. so hard to follow. an makes it even harder to find information.
and, we have BikeIntelligencer on top of that... ;)

Yeah +1 to that.

Already a pretty good HD3 general discussion thread here:

Aw come on, it really only comprised a few art house angles and some insomnia- curing pov.
Cut us some slack; since only three lucky bastards actually have an HD3

Slight pedal feedback on the Tracer but it shouldn't feel sluggish. Shock settings are key here, what're you running? The 3 climbs better but that's true of any other bike you compare the 3 to. I give edge to T on dh, longer wheelbase and VPP, but all this is personal preference. At 6-1 and 200 w gear the 3 feels a bit tight in L and lots of folks have said it sizes on the short side. Longer reach on T fits me perfect but I haven't ridden the 3 XL yet.
