Mojo 3 setup woes

I have a few rides on my M3. So far, not getting along with it all that well. I think it's mostly due to struggles with getting the rear shock set up properly. I can't find a good spot between too much sag (where I'm clipping everything in sight with pedals and the chainring) and correct sag, but a very taut suspension feel (not plush at all).

I have a lot of experience with full suspension bikes and have not had this problem before. It's my first DPS EVOL shock, but I did follow the stated instructions to equalize both chambers while adding pressure.

Has anyone else had trouble with shock setup on this bike?

What are M3 owners running for pressure in the rear for their weight?

Hoping I can get my bike dialed-in, so I can start actually enjoying the ride.

I am also dialing this in, and agree with you that there is a narrow sweet spot, particularly for a heavier rider. I am 200lbs and running 180-190psi with 30-35% sag. I've tried it higher and it pedals great, but does get stiff.

Even at over 30% sag, I am not bottoming out completely. Even with no spacers in the positive chamber, the shock ramps up quickly at end of travel. This bike does pedal amazingly even with this much sag, so no real reason to run less for me.

A couple of things to try to limit your pedal strikes:
1) Increase your low speed compression to 2 or 3 (black dial around rebound adjuster)
2) add spacers to negative chamber. The EVOL shock has a huge negative chamber in the that black plastic sleeve. Ibis gets the shock with 6 o-rings inside to take up space, but I have added 2 more. This should make the negative spring drop off faster with sag and keep you up a little higher. I might add more.

To add spacers, drop the pressure in steps, cycling the shock to equalize. You don't want to end up with a charged negative chamber. Then remove the shock, remove the clip from behind the sleeve, and just pull it off.

Curious what other folks end up with.

Not setup the Evol yet on a M3 (hopefully soon), but on my Ripley LS (RIP), I found that using 275lbs for my 250lbs was the sweet spot. Ibis did recommend 10% over rider weight and at first I ran it a bit lower, the shock felt stiffer. Raising the pressure to 275lbs brought back the plushness (counter intuitive, right ?) Also check out the chart from Fox on rebound setting, when I dialed it in (3 click) it made a huge difference.

From Fox Manual for EVOL DPS
Rebound ADJUSTmentThe rebound adjustment is dependent on the air pressure setting. For example, higher air pressures require slower rebound settings. Use your air pressure to findyour rebound setting.Turn your rebound knob to the closed position (full clockwise) until it stops. Thenback it out (counter-clockwise) to the number of clicks shown in the table below

Air Pressure (psi) Recommended Rebound Setting
  • <100 Open (counter-clockwise)
  • 100-120 11
  • 120-140 10
  • 140-160 9
  • 160-180 8
  • 180-200 7
  • 200-220 6
  • 220-240 5
  • 240-260 4
  • 260-280 3
  • 280-300 Closed (clockwise)

My rider weight is approx 170-175. Current rear shock is at 190 psi, 8 clicks out. Right now, the "feel" seems completely trail dependent -- so, I'm not quite sure if I'm in my own sweet spot yet.

I think the larger rear 2.8 tire at just 16.5 psi may also be screwing with my (our?) ability to dial it in perfectly. On trails with a lot of chunk, I can tell that the tire is affecting everything, but that goes away completely on smoother trails/jumps/drops. Perhaps this plus-tire effect may result in never actually hitting the "perfect" shock settings?

I do happily ride anything and everything with it set to wide open, though, so I know I'm probably getting close.

I love this damn bike btw -- it's playful as hell. On the right trail, it's like riding and jumping on clouds! :)

Im running 13/15 in my rekons. Im 190 geared up ans 16.5 was way too hard for me. 15psi maybe even 14psi felt really good for me.

Im using recommended settings so far, havent had time to dial it it. Too busy just riding it. Feels great. Ill add a click if my tires feel bouncy. Ive been riding the bike with both shocks fully open. The rear 1,2,3 knob ive set in 2 due to not knowing. Hopefully more experienced riders who have had their rides dialed in please help us out.

I switched to DHF 2.5/DHR2 2.4 and it's a little easier for me to feel the difference. I'm pretty happy with 210psi in the rear shock to get me to 25% sag. Propedal set at #1, debating whether I should put it in #2 as I climb quite a bit. My rebound is set at the default 6 clicks open. I'm still playing with my fork settings. So far I have it at 80psi to get me to 20% sag. pressure Seems kinda low relative to what the manual says but I've checked my sag so many times and it's at 20% or 28mm. I've left my LSC fully open at 18 clicks out. Wish there was an easier way to dial this crap in, kinda annoying for someone like me who has a hard time deciding between this and that.

Yes i've ran 2.6 NNs front and back and didnt notice any real benefits in rolling resistance or handling, but i did find there was a touch less grip and as you'd expect i had to run a couple of psi more than i do with 2.8s. Cut a long story short i switched back to 2.8s and sold the 2.6s after a month. The biggest improvement i've discovered tyrewise was sticking a 2.8 rocket ron on the back. The weather has been fairly dry in the UK, but i have ridden with it a couple of times in the wet and with 15psi the grip is nearly as good as the NN but the rolling resistance is reduced and speed increased noticeably. I ride quite technical rooty, loamy trails and mini-downhill, so i was obviously concerned about the how an XC tyre would perform in terms of grip an durability, but in 2.8 form this tyre has blown me away and i cant see me changing back anytime soon. :):)

I've been running my rebound 3 or 4 clicks from full fast, and I've noticed the rear feels a little bouncy when climbing over bumps and rocks. I'm 150lbs and running my Evol with 140 psi. Running 2.4 Ardent in the rear at ~23psi and 2.5 DHF WT up front with ~20psi.

Gonna try going a little slower on the rebound, though I like the current performance on descents.
