I'm in the process of building a second wheelset to complement my old HG-hub wheels (11-speed, not upgradeable to MS). New Hydra hub can be had in MS and HG (upgrading to MS later will cost $160). So this is the time to upgrade the drivetrain to 12-speed and get the new hub with MS freehub body.
I don't need the range of 12-speed (have 11-51) or narrower gaps. So the only reason to do this is to future-proof and to have the better gouging protection.
11-speed HG cassette is on a 5-cog spider. MS cassettes are on 7-cog spider and have the larger number of spines. so in theory the MS should have much less gouging. Google didn't give me any gouging problems with MS (except price gouging, lol).
How has that worked out in practice so far? Do you really don't get gouging?
I had asked i9 about the two freehub options and the person mentioned gouging can happen on MS if there are too many cogs not on the spider, the cassette isn't tightened etc. Just happens less. From what I see there are only the Shimano cassettes and all (Deore through XT) have a 7-cog spider. So the torquiest gears spread the load and it should be solid. I have a fatbike with 26t chainring, so there is a lot of torque. My current HG hub has a steel "bite guard" which gets bent, but holds up (those inserts come loose, and I need to hold them in place when installing cassette)
