I installed a Microshift Advent X CS-G104 11-48 cassette on my mountain bike equipped with a Shimano Shadow Plus derailleur and Shimano shifter .
I put on a new chain with it and adjusted the derailleur. When I rode on a mtb trail, it was clunky and slow to shift on several sprockets. I rode it about 5 miles, went home and put the Shimano 11-42 that I had taken off. It shifted very good.
I was very disappointed with it.

Shimano's older 10spd derailleurs aren't built to work with that kind of range. They're an older design that predates that cassette you tried. That cassette is meant to be paired with the rest of the Microshift Advent X drivetrain.

Hell, 11-42 is even stretching the capabilities of an older design 10spd derailleur. Those derailleurs were made to work with an 11-36 cassette max.

I am using an extender on the derailleur. I have had thoughts of upgrading the derailleur and shifter . I had called the Micro shift tech line and after about waiting 10 minutes to talk to a person, I gave up and removed the cassette until I can research it and give it some thought.

what extender? 11-48 is beyond the capabilities of the ones I know of. and those things are a bit of a bodge, anyway.

this is another example of a case where if you aren't going to go all-in (on the microshift advent x drivetrain), don't bother. Sortof like Shimano 12spd and a few other things. trying to half-ass it just isn't going to be satisfactory.

I believe that it is meant to be used as a set with the matching rear derailleur. A shimano derailleur may have slightly different gaps between cogs and is not designed for such a big range.

I would strongly suggest that you try all 3 microshift (cassette/RD/shifter) parts together.

This is your answer right here. The 10spd shimano bits are not meant for that kind of range. Microshift Advent X is 10 speed that can handle that range. I run the 9spd Advent with a sunrace 11-46 and it shift perfectly.

I just put a 10 speed Micro shift advent X, shifter, derailleur, and cassette on an old Foes I just built up. The quality looks good. It bolted up and shifted perfect with zero adjustments. I haven't rode it yet but I think its going to be great for the money.

Oh yeah. I love it and don't feel like I am missing anything at all.

Desperate time call for desperate measures. Advent X 11-48 cassette, with a Shimano XT 10 speed shifter, Shimano XT 11 speed derailleur with a Wolf Tooth 10 speed goat link installed on it. If I didn't know I changed the cassette on this setup, I wouldn'tbe abe to tell by how it shifts. It also adjusted easily and chain wrap looks good.

Thanks for sharing this info. I had something quite similar in mind and already bought parts but have not put them on my bike yet.

This is my value for money setup based on what's available since there's a parts shortage right now:

M5100 derailleur
Zee shifter
Microshift 11-48T cassette

I was worried that it might not shift well based on what was written earlier in the thread, but your post confirms that it will work. 🙂
