I have a set of 2007 Mavic CrossMax SLR wheels and my front wheel has developed an irritating noise that sounds like a "card" in the spokes. I've had the wheels for about 1 year and they have approximately 750 off-road miles on them.

I've isolated the problem to the wheel as I've removed the brakes, swapped wheels, etc. to try and diagnose this.

Has anyone else had this problem? If so, what have you done to solve it? It's irritating given the price of the wheelset.

Exact circumstance for me too-similar miles & age

Mine just started making the noise yesterday- I thought it was coming from cog or bb at first or even the chain because of the repetitive nature of the sound but one mech isolated it to the front wheel. I believe I have the warranty coverage it may be a return for me I hate a noisy bike- I have no other info or advice - perhaps it is a spoke loosing tension- I will take it by my good mech see what he thinks- will let you know if any resolution.

Noise Back

I got the wheel to be quiet for a while with tri-flow around the spoke and hub connect- and at the nipples but now the noise is back and very irritating. I may do the mp 3 return. I am trying to look for more answers and suggestions. I have looked over all the entries on this forum for advice as well. I love the Mavic products my old SLs never had a problem but these wheels are getting to me:confused:

I have serviced the hubs

Both front and rear- helps for a ride or two and then noise back- I believe it is problem with the design on the spokes- crossing too close at the hub and rubbing possibly-at least this is what I am hearing from other SLR riders. Both pair of my older Sls have never had a peep. I am thinking of asking my lbs to warranty my MP3 with the older SLs.

Noise Back

Mavic rebuilt both pair of my SLR's under MP3 took 4 weeks- three rides later and the noise is back on both wheels. I have asked that Mavic switch me into the new 2009 SLR's the noise is making me nuts. I love my Mavics but enough is enough.:madman:

What are you going to do?

Jeddog-I asked my lbs to contact Mavic and ask that they put me into the new 2009 SLR or repace my SLR (likely to have same problem) or perhaps get the older SL's- I own two sets of the older SL's and never had a ping/noise out of them. Too much cash to have this problem Mavic is aware of the issue and is not acting responsibly IMHO-what do you intend to do?

Sad to say I'll probably just deal with the noise for now. My LBS changed hands and I dont know if they still have a mavic account and I dont feel like having the bike in the shop for another 2 months. Possibly over the winter. In the mean time spraying a little teflon in the hubs helps mitigate the noise somewhat. BTW I have a pair of 2006 Mavic SL with no noise problems but they are at Mavic having the rear hub replaced. I have a brand new pair of American Classic 29er and we'll see how they fare.

Thanks Jeddog

I'll keep the teflon spray in mind. I found today if I squirt a little water around the spoke hub interface it stopped noise for about 40 minutes of riding- :) It just makes me crazy to have to do this with top end Mavic products. Im like you my old SL's have never made a peep-other than when they needed routine maintenance. My LBS owner is on vacation until end of week I'll keep this thread posted on what Mavic says. I dont want to loose my bikes again for 4-6 weeks.

Send them Back

Mavic wants me to send both pair of the SLR's back to them again. I will just bear with the noise for the rest of the season and send them back over the winter. I did once more find that if I applied tri-flow to the hub/spoke interface the noise was lessened considerably for a 4-5 hour period.

I hate the noise as well on my new "Test" cr29ss wheelset. Use thick Motorcycle chainlube at BOTH {rim and hub} spoke ends. I put some small pieces of clear chainstay protector at the point of contact at the cross of the spokes. Try bearing lube if the noise is like a creaking door........ I may have blown { I'm 200 lbs. these days} the freehub pawls after 750 hard miles, doesn't spin all that well and catches at times. Though they are light and tubeless, I still love my hand-built, 32 hole DT Swiss hubs/Stans' rims combo. Still great after two years of insane Epics.

peace,
G.
