Lot of folks have done it. I did it on my aluminum frame. I ovalized the hole and filed down all the sharp edges. You can also put a rubber grommet in there to protect the cable. No problems so far.

Thanks, how big of a hole did you drill compared to the cable and also how far above the bottom bracket? I'm assuming high enough to keep a higher radius of the cable as it turn up from the down tube to the seat tube.

 

I think my drill bit was a bit bigger than the 5mm cable housing then I worked the drill up and down until it had an oval shape. And yes, about 3-4" above the BB or whatever kept the bend in the hose pretty gradual for its run up the down tube and also to keep the hole away from the welds in the BB area. I also took the seat post out and turned the bike upside down while doing it so the shavings didn't drop down into the BB shell/bearings.
