How many people here find the laws and fees for the import of Bicycles outdated and useless. I do. I did not realize their were additional import fees here to protect the Canadian bike companies. They suck in 2022 its ridiculous that Canadians should have to pay so much more for bikes because of this old rule that has no merit in this day and age as the majority of bike components are made overseas in the first place.

Got a link to those rules/duties?

When I lived in Canada (until 2006) there was only import duty of 6% on complete bikes and wheelsets. There was no duty on bike parts regardless of country of origin or type of part.

Parts were more expensive IMO due to the lack of competition among Canadian parts distributors.

So I would often order from US retailers with free shipping to WA, where I would go down and pick them up. Still had to pay GST at the border but that was it. I had a Canada Customs officer make me go outside one time and write down the origin country of each part I was bringing in since he was convinced I'd owe duties. His only response was "hmmm" when he entered it in his computer and duty owing came out to $0.

.

The gidst is prices are too high here and they should given canadian brands tax breaks and get rid of this law that sucks in the current times of bicycle manufacturing. The way the market is now global it would just make better bikes more accessible to the average person.

Importing a complete, assembled bicycle will cost you 13 per cent in duty. If you're just bringing the frame in, that's a five per cent tariff, and if you're importing complete wheels, there's a 6.5 per cent tariff.

Alot of these laws were made before the invention of cheap shipping with protectionism of canadian industry in mind. We have intraprovincial trade laws that are even dumber.
The thought process here was to protect small markets from being dominated by larger markets making things more costly for consumers in return to help some small company.

I paid HST only when bought bike on evo.com with shipment to upstate NY, went there, collected it on US side and crossed in a car. Bike was partially assembled and in the box. No duties. One year ago.

Thats an exceptionn and not the rule. Complete bikes as stated is 13% tariff plus whatever taxes in your province (HST, GST, PST).

The best way to solve this is vote for elected officials federally or provincially who are against duty taxes such as this. The royals need their cut as well. Harry and Megs needed funding for their new documentary 😉

AFAIR, "complete bike" is defined as bike that is fully assembled and can be ridden as-is. Maybe some luck as well, sometimes I get lucky with customs, couple of times I did declare things and they just let me go.

Buy a Canadian bike!

I agree but you could argue the Canadian bikes are slightly above their market values because of these laws as well. I think in the modern world we should lift these tariffs on imports and parts and offer tax breaks to the Canadian companies.
