Years ago I was on a quest to find the loudest hub I could find. Trailmech makes a ratchet drive hub fits the bill. Stateside E-13’s are noisy. I currently have a Novatec 104 POE budget hub that is louder than most listed here. Glad this noise thing is in my rear view mirror as silence is really golden - roller drive hub.
 
Just ride it. When it comes to lubes that quiet loud hubs I've found none last very long. I gave up on trying to shut up my i9. Dumonde, and whatever else only lasts but so long. Even those hubs with an oil bath that's supposed to make them silent doesn't last. Just ride it and the noise will come back like it or not.
Sounds (haha) like you and OP need to swap hubs!
 
Loud pipes save lives. Especially on tight trails with dense foliage and high multi use traffic.

That said:


Hyperbole looks terrible on you.
not many things, hyperbole included, look good on me.

loud pipes is hardly analogous. nobody traveling in the same direction as me can hear my hub as i approach from the rear. nobody traveling in the opposite direction can hear my hub as i approach on the trail. nobody traveling in any direction can hear my hub when i am pedaling. conversely, and more analogous, a speaker (or even a bell ) can act in perpetuity. loud pipes act in perpetuity (as long as i keep topping of the tank), and make themselves more present with a panic rev...and make themselves useful when somebody is merging on to you. loud pipes have zero impact in head on or rear end situations.

all that said, it does beg the question of what is the definition of a speed limit?

Hikers definitely hear loud hubs ahead of time.

No hiker has ever heard my loud hub when I am pedaling.

In terms or who has right of way it legally goes in this order, loud hubs be dammed:

Pedestrians
Horses
Non motorized vehicles
Motorized vehicles

And the concept of a speed limit is "the MAXIMUM safe rate of travel under IDEAL conditions." If your approaching Pedestrians faster than they can react on your two way multi use trails, that's on you.
 
What specific sound do you want the hub to make? I'm not sure I can hear BRRRR in my head.

Internal gear hubs are oftern pretty quiet. What IGH are you using?

Many of the trails around me were built by mountain bikers and we have the right of way over hikers. Not to say we can run them over, just that they are supposed to yield to us. Just lay off the pedaling so the hub can make it's buzz to warn then of your approach, as you basically said, you shouldn't be accelerating toward hikers anyway.

I love how you speak authoritatively as if the matter is settled. But want to focus purely on situations where you're point is King.

Hello, I bought a new bike, and my hub "broke", the pedals were turning with the wheel at all time. I gave it to the bike shop in which i bought the bike, they repaired it for free, but now the hub makes a very quiet noise. I hate that, i want it to go BRRRRRR.

Do you know how i could make my hub sound louder? Do I need to buy things or juste maybe change something in the HUB?

edit: I forgot to ask, my cassette is not straight, when it spins i see that it is not. Is that bad?
They probably lubricated the hub's freehub to make it turn more "freely". This stops the pedals turning when the wheels turn. You might not like the lack of sound, but it will probably get louder with use. For your cassette, if you mean it wobbles when the wheel spins but the cassette isn't rotating, this is normal.

@Crabe_The_Night - there's a simple solution. Take off your free hub body. Hub pawls typically are tensioned with a round spring. Take it off and replace it with keychain ring cut to the size. Keychain ring is way stronger than anything used in hubs and it will make hub much louder.

I speak with no more authority than anyone on here who has accomplished the monumental feat of acquiring their driver's license. If the order of right of way is incorrect, I am all ears for correction...I am a perpetual student and always happy to learn. I am not sure any attorney for any insurance company would acquiesce to the position that "my bike was loud enough for that hiker to know to get out of the trail." Loud pipes aren't employed to move cars out of a bikers way...they are intended to keep cars from running them over. Loud pipes would be analagous if the hikers had noise devices to keep us from running them over.


The interesting thing about both of your posts directed at me is that they do not attempt to present fact. Instead they rely on emotion and derision: "Hyperbole does not look good on you" and "Ima mark you down in the "ew" column." Emotion and derision are devices typically employed when somebody has run out of facts.

I agree that if my bike is loud that it can help prevent collisions. But it's not the hiker's responsibility to avoid me.
