Just like the title says. I recently put on a set of Oury grips on my mountain bike to replace some Renthal grips and it got me thinking: how do other folks remove their grips from their handlebars? I'm also curious as to whether or not you reuse your grips. For instance, when you need to cut down your bars, would you like to reinstall your old grips or would you rather cut them off and install a fresh set?

I unbolt mine. Clamp ons.

But for slide on ones, I either cut them (for replacement) Compressed air or pry up the end and spray some hair spray under the grip and then twist & pull.

I use clamp on ones as well. If I use the other kind I cut them off and use new ones and put them on with hair spray.

My experience is from motorcycles but I would expect them to be similar. I roll the grip up a little to see if there's any adhesive under it, and if so, how hard and/or thick. If I can, I just continue rolling the grip back until it's off the bar.. this works probably 80% of the time. If there's a strong adhesive then I cut the grip if I don't intend to reuse it or I work a skinny round screw driver down under the grip and then around the bar if I wanna reuse it.

I thread the soldered end if an old brake cable under the gip, squirt windex between the cable, grip and bar, and the grip pulls off. It dries in a few minutes and can be reinstalled. Been doing it this way for years, just make sure it's the soldered end or the cable will fray.

The BEST way to do it is cheap hairspray, the big aresol can. Slide a small screwdriver under the grip and spray it in. You will need to wiggle the grip a bit to remove it. To put it back on hit it with a quick spray slide the grip on and let it dry. It will dry sticky and the grip will not move.

i do not recommend rolling them back on grips like oury's or rogue's that have completely seperated sections, they are a ***** to unroll again

nope. best way is an air compressor. takes maybe 10 seconds, no fuss, no mess, clean and simple. ask your local shop, 99% will say compressor.
I don't, (keep mine full most of the time).
I use the alcohol method and I use perhaps one of the most useful tools I have ever come across. It is one of the utensils from a fondue kit. Just a long, thin, pointed piece of steel with a nice handle. Slides under grips fine, spray a little alcohol in the gap and twist off.
Alcohol on the bar and handle to get it in on where you want it then I use some canned air to evaporate the alcohol and the grip usually sets like you glued it.
The fondue stick is the perfect tool for this. Takes a minute or two to do a grip. Great for lots of other little tasks as well.

Yeah, you are right, I just hate listening to compressors and a can of hairspary is a bit cheaper.

Compressed air.
+ 1. Air nozzle on the compressor method works great. You need very little line pressure to get them off this way and it takes no time at all. I'm making the transition to locking grips on all my bikes so I won't need to do this very often anymore.

Mine are clamp ons. Typically I remove non clamp ons with a razor since I rarely remove grips without intending to throw them away.

I use lock-ons now but when I used slide ons I used to work an old spoke in and squirt some windex, simple green or any soapy spray cleaner underneith and twist the grip til it loosens up.

I rolled off my Oury's and never did get then unrolled, compressed air is good .... but i use lock-on grips now. If you are not planning to reuse them i would just cut the little suckers off

i use a waterhose nozzle in stream , if lock ons i use an allen wrench
