Just built up my new Fetish cycles Obsession frame and I have to say that the Horizontal Dropouts with the RedLine Chaintugs are a dream. Setting the tension and aligning the wheel is so easy. No longer am I bound by the magic gear or chain tensioners! FREEDOM!

Right on. Every time I see a thread titled "Weird EBB Noises" or "Cracked EBB" or "Help! Loose EBB" or "Gary Fisher," I just shake my head and wonder why anyone fell for that "improvement." Sure, it's a PITA to change a wheel with a disc brake with horizontal dropouts, but then you gotta ask .... disc brakes? On a singlespeed?

The EBB does solve the problem of having to adjust everything every time you change gearing. But that begs the question, how often do you change gearing?

Then I gotta answer.....yes. Where I live it's either that or put the bike away for 7 months out of the year. Based on my experience, there's not even any meaningful basis for comparison between the effectiveness of discs and rim brakes in the wet.

My guess is there are a lot of

different ideals of what a single speed should look like, for me the simpler the better.

Steel, horizontal drops, V-brakes and rigid would sure keep it simple,
ultra light and pure but I just can't bring myself to give up front suspension.

Vertical dropout FTW!

Best of both worlds.. Paragon dropout. I like speedy tire changes/cog changes and a true horizontal doesn't equal quick change. The Paragon allows for vertical dropout w/o the use of an EBB.

Just got my first single speed a few weeks ago so I've never had anything other than the sliding dropouts that are on this bike. After reading all the "squeaky EBB" threads, I knew I didn't want one of those. Also, the sliding dropouts have an adjustment screw (which helps with alignment) and TWO "clamping bolts" on each dropout rather than relying on just the axle.

I consider myself fortunate that I lucked into going straight to the sliding dropouts. :)
I like 'em. And I'm really diggin' the single speed :D

My cross bike has horizontal drops with disc brakes, and I don't need to adjust anything except wheel position when I change gearing. On my EBB equipped bike I have to adjust my saddle height, and my pedals/BB are in a different position relative to my saddle every time. My next frame will have sliders or horizontals for sure!

consider yourself lucky - it doesn't always work out that well with horizontals and discbrakes. Amongst the possible problems are squeaky brakes and rotor rub due to slight missalignments after installing the wheel, difficutlies to remove it in the first place because the disc gets in the way, and wheel coming out of alignment by itself due to backward force while braking.

It's always the same story.. horizontal dropouts (or call them forkends if you want) are problematic with discs. EBBs are heavy, expensive and can be noisy. And sliders? they are kinda ugly :D (except for the paragons)

ah damn it... gimme a rennen rollenlager

IMO, if you can't remove your rear wheel without having to loosen or remove your disc brake caliper, that's either poor design on the part of the frame builder, or poor set-up on the part of the rider. As far as proper alignment goes, chain tugs do wonders for those that can't seem to get a wheel straight in the dropouts.
