So the other day was frustrating, until
I ended up in the hospital. 7 broken ribs all on the left side.

Add a separated shoulder, grase 3. Spent a night in the hospital under observation and O2.

Omfg this hurts. Have a couple emails into specialists about my shoulder, and see if they recommend surgery or no.

Funny story. It wasnt a jump line but a line riding down a set of stairs. I landed at rhe bottom but fell frlm tbe mid point.

I got a gust midway, ended up overcorrecting.

Ive done much harder things on my bike before, but it’s never what you expect to take you out.

obviously no two injuries are the same but I am two and a half weeks post grade 3 AC separation of my right shoulder. Fortunately in my case the physician I saw did not think surgery was necessary. I didn't have the broken ribs to go with it but if this helps you at all, I began PT this past week and slowly but surely it is progressing and my range of motion is quite good. It still lets me know it is injured if I move it too much or inadvertently try and lift something but on the positive side, the constant pain is gone and it is improving. Anyway, I am sorry that happened to you and I hope you heal fast!

I had a grade 3 ac separation as well. The surgeon I saw did not recommend surgery. I did a lot of physical therapy and I was able to get back on the bike at 7 weeks. I didn’t have broken ribs though. My shoulder hurt for several days. I hope you get well soon.

I had a grade 3 AC separation and had surgery. My surgeon recommended surgery due to my job and all the activities I do. Said it might heal without surgery and might be fine, but would waste 3 months trying the conservative option and if it didn't workout for me then surgery would put me out another 3 months. He gave me my options and I chose the surgery route and was back on the bike in 10 weeks. Depending on your insurance some won't approve surgery without trying the conservative route first. Good luck and heal quick.

I read this post and had to check the date to make sure it wasn't one I'd written 4 years ago. 100% mirrors my situation, and no regrets on going the surgical route. It helped that my doc races XC and got the same injury while riding park. Same grade, and he went with the surgery for himself.

It was pretty wild to see how much muscle tone I lost keeping the shoulder immobilized, really had to focus on using that arm/shoulder more when I went back to work. Built back up pretty quickly though.

Ouch! Best of luck for your recovery. Whenever it feels dark just remember one day soon you'll be fine, and looking back on it, it will feel like the blink of an eye. Hopefully you get some nice pain meds and some time off 😁

What @NumbNutts said. For a grade 3 separation, surgery can be dependent on your line of work and activities. Most athletes will opt for surgery to get back quicker. I've broken and separated my left shoulder multiple times, and healed naturally each time. But recovery takes forever. I do a lot of mobility and strength work now to try and bulletproof my shoulders as much as I can, but if I ever separate either again, I'm getting surgery.

4 or 5 weeks ago I went otb and probably cracked a rib. The pain in the first week after was intense. I was terrified of sneezing or coughing and lifting my left arm was problematic. I can't imagine what you feel like since that sounds quite a bit worse.

OMG.. everyone's support here has been amazing. Thank you <3

Meeting with the shoulder doc in a bit. I'll let you know what he says. I'm in the 50+ crowd, but it breaks people because they don't think I'm 50+ (usually guessing 10-15 years younger). So it could go either way. Not taking any bets, but we'll see.

I already sent the radiology reports to my PT, and she's ready for me. The doc I'm seeing is one of the two she recommended.

I did research when I separated mine and the opinions seem to be split pretty evenly on surgery vs no surgery for grade 3. It will depend on your doctor and your specific situation. I opted not to have it because I didn’t want to be in a sing that long and I thought it might be worse if I had the same injury again. I do not like the bump though, so if that bothers you like it does me, get the surgery now before you start healing. My follow up was 3 weeks after my original appointment and I had started healing enough by that point that I didn’t want to go backwards.

I have a 3rd degree a/c separation that I did at age 55. My dr said he couldn’t fix it so no surgery. It’s been 3 years and I’m pretty strong after years of weights and pt, but the injury has made me ride more cautious. I feel like I’m fragile. 😟
