Giro has unveiled a new lightweight full-face helmet that tips the scale at less than 800g for a size medium. The new Coalition Spherical features the MIPS Spherical system to mitigate rotational forces in the event of a crash. It's also very well-ventilated, with a total of 25 vents.

Giro Coalition Spherical Highlights
  • Confirmed weight of 785g grams in size medium
  • MIPS Spherical system
  • 25 vents (13 in front/12 on the sides and back)
  • Halo System chin bar for enhanced impact management

As with many of Giro's premium half-shell Spherical helmets, the Coalition uses a ball-and-socket design with a low-friction slip-plane between independent EPP and EPS foam layers designed to manage both high-speed and low-speed impacts. It also introduces what Giro calls its Halo System chin bar, which incorporates truss-like structures made of a material called Pebax at the junctions between the chin bar and helmet to dissipate impact forces.

Ventilation is a design requirement of many lightweight full-face helmets, and the Coalition is no exception, boasting 25 vents, 13 in the front and 12 located on the top, sides, and rear. A Fidlock buckle and swappable cheek and occipital pads handle fit adjustments.

Ride Impressions

My primary issues with wearing a full-face helmet outside of bike park riding and enduro racing are the reduced field of view and muffled auditory feedback. When it comes to lightweight helmets, both the Giro Coalition and the Fox Proframe provide expansive fields-of-view and have side vents in line with the wearer's ears.

The Coalition's fit isn't as tuneable as the Fox Proframe—the absence of a quick-adjust dial is one of the ways Giro's designers were able to win the weight game against the Proframe, which weighs 820g in a medium. It took some time to get the fit to my liking, but I was able to find a combination of cheek and occipital pads that kept this helmet securely in place. (The 25mm-thick cheek pads paired with the 30mm-thick occipital pads in my case.)

Testing a full face in winter isn't the ideal scenario for commenting on ventilation, yet I was able to feel a significant amount of air moving over my head, thanks to the numerous exhaust vents. The heavily-vented chin bar also helps quite a bit while climbing. I am pleased to report that, as expected, based on the location of the side vents, auditory trail feedback is excellent.

Verdict

The low weight, user-friendly Fidlock chin buckle, and very effective vents allow the Coalition to make a strong case for wearing it in place of half shell on technical trail rides.
