Hi, new to the forum but would appreciate the help. Bought a used Trek FX 2 from a friend who was moving away for $50. Bike looks fine except for a worn rear tire and a smashed front derailleur, which is a Tourney TY71. Bike 3 rings up front and 8 in the back.

Specs for the FX 2 are:
Shifters: Shimano EF500, 8 speed
Front derailleur: Shimano Tourney TY71
Rear
derailleur: Shimano Acera M360
Crank: Forged alloy, 48/38/28 w/chainguard
Cassette: Shimano HG31, 11-32, 8 speed

I can't find the TY71 but can find FDs for a 3-ring front.

  • Does the FD have to match a specific shifter model or type?
  • Can any FD work provided it's meant for:
    • a MTB (seatpost angle)
    • a 3-ring crankset
    • a certain number of teeth on the middle ring?
    • matches the direction of cable pull
  • Is there any use in upgrading, even slightly from the Tourney?
  • For that matter, should I bother with the Acera RD while I'm at it? I know it's a 'cheap' bike and we're not riding hard, but I'd like it to work.
The culprit.

I may have missed some protocol before posting this question. If so, I'm sorry. I don't believe I've ever had a forum question go unanswered in other forums.

I did a search here first. I did some research but I'm just looking for some help from a community is experts and those who've don't this before.

Please help! 😀 Thank you!

You can actually call Jenson bikes and they have experts who can find you the right one. I see lots of 6/7/8 used and new front derailleurs online. If you stick with the Tourney group set, it should be compatible with your existing chainring spacing. Even an upgraded Shimano group set would more than likely be compatible. They look to be in the $15. range.

Something like this... Amazon.com : TBNOD Bicycle Front Derailleurs, 7/8/9 Speed Mountain MTB Bike Front Derailleurs 7 8 9 Speed MTB Bike Bicycle Front Derailleurs : Sports & Outdoors

Hi Tall. Thx for the response. I should've mentioned I had found some similar derailleurs but I wanted to make sure I had the right part. I believe mine is a down-pull. I see some safe called "dual-pull" - I don't know if that means it can be figured to pull from above our below.

Thanks for the tip on Jenson. Hasn't heard of them before.

PS. My LBS closed down permanently this past year, for reasons unrelated to covid, I'm told.

Front derailleurs are pretty easy to find used because a lot of people upgrading their bikes to 1x setups. Going to a 1x setup means eliminating the front derailleur and using a larger range rear cassette with a long cage rear derailleur. I did it to my last bike, so I have a Shimano up pull front derailleur sitting in a drawer right now. The derailleur shifter does the indexing, so the derailleur moves what ever distance the shifter moves. This allows for a pretty universal design on most derailleurs. A dual-pull is even more universal allowing it for use on either up or down pull. Your derailleur does look like a down pull. Look on CL under bike parts.
