I feel so lucky to live in an area (VA/DC/MD) with an active advocacy group which holds weekly trail maintenance days and promote peaceful co-exsistance with hikers, bikers, and equestrians.

I also feel lucky to not have a face full of barbwire thanks to tards like John Parulis.

It is as simple as this. The lands he refers to are publicly owned either by the city, state. They are maintained using tax dollars. Mountain bikers pay taxes. That is the one thing his logic will never get around. With any public resource there are ofcourse rules but telling me I can't use that resource in my way because you want to use it your way is BS.

The rider types he describes represent a small percentage of recreational bikers.

What is interesting is that this guy acts like hikers are the only user group that should be able to use open space. I think it's ironic that he can say we feel entitled to the land and that we do not deserve trails to ride but at the same time only wants trails open to hikers(look at his entitlement).
Not sure why the original link was posted, this blog is over a year old. Stirrin the pot? Be thankful the guy has not posted since then. Be thankful the guy is not connected.

Welcome to Marin, circa 2008. Only NK and Ride RMB live here (besides myself) and all I have to say is . . . YOU HAVE NO IDEA what we have to put up with. We see letters like this every month or so in the IJ equating mountain bikers with the clubbers of baby harp seals. Most of the letters are outright distortions, but we fight a losing battle regardless. And if the Sierra Club gets involved, look out.

But worst of all, the local cycling community does not seem to care. Lots of people riding, but how many dues paying members of the Marin Trails council do we have? How many show up at the NorCal series races?

My point? People, don't take what you have for granted. Get involved. Be vocal. Above all, suport your local MTB organizations. We have to look out for each other, or we will all collectively fail.

And they will win.

NovatoKid, check your pm's.

Years ago left-wing extremists lumped mountain biking in with motorized OHV, and until the MTB crowd realizes this we're going to have a tough time fighting hysterical, illogical hikers such as this guy. (Even the Sierra Klub considers mountain biking similar to OHV, which irritates a lot of Sierra Klubbers.) OHV organizations (who believe it or not are also nature-loving 99% of the time, just like us) have been fighting a losing battle, but by getting organized they've at least slowed down the loss of OHV areas. They have the same issues; loss of riding areas causes overuse of the few remaining areas, which are then closed due to "overuse", and the cycle snowballs. Responsible usage means we need more OHV areas & more singletrack MTB trails, not less.

Join IMBA asap.

Joining the IMBA is a great idea. I did years ago. Another tactic is to join the Sierra Club of which I have been a member for several years as well. I figure the best way to combat the negative image of MTBr's is show them what the larger percentage of us are like. Their perception like many others comes from the videos and magazines. In a way we ourselves perpetuate an inaccurate image because all the videos and magazines show are guys going at high speed and jumping and hucking wearing full body armor. Nobody wants to watch some old fart like me cruising some singletrack at 10 mph. Imagine if all the members of the IMBA joined the Sierra Club. Infiltrate their ranks and conquer!!!

good post. smart people are just as capable as dumb people at being petty, immature, and unwilling to accept others viewpoints. theres a big problem of that in SB, where a bunch of well educated yuppies are trying to shut down the trails, and it didn't help that for awhile people constantly went out of their way to antagonize them. it sucks because they're so wrong and malicious, and the natural response is to get pissed, but that only makes them look justified. its alot easier to agree with the person who talks smooth and looks justified then the person who looks like an idiot whos spluttering at the mouth in fury. not saying hes smarter, or the hikers are smarter, but that its a bad image to fall into that bikers are idiots and hikers are totally justified.

anyway, the internet is lame for stuff like this. dealing with them in person gives a humanizing factor to both groups and makes things alot more likely to be worked out
Yes, plus it's hard to hit someone with a baseball bat & stuff them in the trunk of your car over the internet...
