so, to open up another can of worms,
what about maintenance issues? I've heard the bearings on the eggs need to be replaced every few hundred miles.
I find the simplicity of the design attractive and the open design (mud here is STICKY), but don't want to be rebuilding my pedals every spring. . . .

They're rediculously easy to rebuild with the $15 kit. But, to prevent having to do it every year, keep them well lubricated by using the grease fitting that comes with them.

The only thing that bothered me about eggbeaters was the old axles that were too wide. I found some Ti short axles and now I like them better than other pedals BECAUSE of the float and the late release. I kinda like the way I can move my ankles around when clearing uphill switchbacks over roots in my granny gear without coming unclipped and stopping.

To each his own, I love mine.

I really like my eggbeaters. I have about 2000 miles on them this year and about 10 races without a rebuild yet. I do replace the cleats after about 700 miles.

I also like how they perform in the mud, and wet sand much better then my SPD
