I built an On-One Pompetamine in the fall for commuter duty and built it as a SS partly for budget reasons and partly because SS would be fine where I live now. And it is fine. But I'm looking at moving over the summer and will likely wind up someplace hillier.

I have figured that this day would come and thought I'd just have a new wheel built with an Alfine hub, use a Jtek barcon shifter and go that route, since the frame is built for IGH.

but it occurred to me that there might be a derailleur hanger out there that could fit a frame with track ends and that such a part might well be "universal fit". It seems I was onto something and I found a few.

Derailleur Hanger for Horizontal Dropout

Amazon.com: DMR 10mm Chain Tugs with derailleur hanger, Pair: Sports & Outdoors

Problem Solvers Chain Tensioner with Derailleur Hanger

All these require a thru-bolt axle, while my rear hub is currently QR. I have these Shimano hubs, and suspect I could convert them. I could also use a Surly conversion washer to use my QR hubs with these hangers.

Doing this would allow me to just put a derailleur and cassette on my current wheels, and have a little more choice in barcons. I figure it'll cost half or less of what the new Alfine wheelset + shifter would cost.

Has anyone used a hanger like this with good/bad results?

The M629 is easily converted to a solid axle, just pick up a Wheels Mfg AXLE-06 and couple of axle nuts (I like Problem Solvers best)

And yes I've use a gear plug on a horizontal drop-out bike. It's not something you want to remove the wheel from much, but once set up works well.

were you browsing forks earlier? $278 is expensive for just ONE axle nut. :D

but this is what I was hoping to hear. I don't remove my rear wheel much. only to switch between summer/winter configs on the commuter (basically, add or remove the fenders).

Dobt...ok, fixed it.
