Here's my story. On Friday I was at my LBS looking at a new road bike. While I was there I bought a new bottom bracket and a Deore front derailleur for a bike I am building up. On Saturday I was at another LBS and saw the same Deore derailleur for $15 cheaper. For a few bucks I won't care but since the original LBS was close to my office I figured I would return it. I checked my receipt and it stated in no uncertain terms in writing - 14 days for full refund or exchange.

So I take it to the LBS to return it and they tell me store credit only. I said hey the receipts states full refund or you can match the other bike shop. Nope store credit only. I talk to the manager and he says no - store credit only. I show him the receipt that clearly states Full refund and he says that's not what it used to say. So finally he reluctantly agrees to give me arefund while the whole time muttering Store Credit Only under his breath. He wouldn't even look me i nthe eye and was unpleasant to deal with. So he pissed me off enough that I will take my $1500 new bike purchase and all my other business elsewhere. Why give me - a customer - a hard time when your policy is written on the receipt! Its not like I was trying to cheat him! Well he has lost my business forever.

Is this an independently owned store or a chain store? If it's a chain, it's not hard to believe because stores like that change their policies every other week. Regardless, they're obviously not big on customer service.

Obviously the guy was an idiot willing to lose a customer over a fairly inexpensive part.

However, I used to work for someone who would flip flop his policies all the time. Forget what it said on the receipt, one day you'd get grilled by the owner for taking back an unused in stock item, the next he'd flip out because we wouldn't take back a special order item (that clearly stated no return on that item).

ProTip: If you paid for it with a credit card, the card company will make them honor the return policy on the receipt.

Make sure when you purchase your $1500 bike elsewhere you bring it by to show him.
