so i have this bike. Last time I rode it a rock flew up and broke my rear derailleur. So I'm debating on repairing it. And I figure since I am buying parts, I'd rather buy better ones. I don't really know jack about bikes so I'm not sure what to buy. I plan on replacing front and rear derailleurs, and maybe crankset.

I have a few questions.

Would it just be better to buy a new model year equivalent bike or just repair this one?

When should you replace the crankset and rear cassette? My gears look pretty worn and i think were pretty much crap to begin with.

What are some cost effective parts I can put on there? If I repair this, I'd like to put some decent components on there. At least one or two steps up.

If I do repair it I plan on installing the parts, and letting a LBS do the adjusting.

Don't bother upgrading that bike. It will be much better to buy a better bike if you feel like this one is holding you back....otherwise just replace the part with the same level and ride it into the ground.

Price out a X-5 R.D., 8 speed cassette, and chain. I'd say about $100 installed. Cheaper than the $1000-$1200 you'd spend on a better bike. Cassette and chain get replaced together. A new Deore crankset with bearings is another $100.
