I recently swapped from CB Candy 7 to XT Trail and was surprised by the increased platform laterally. It definitely adds more support pushing into corners. But it all depends on your particular shoes. I agree that the rest of the platform on the XT Trails, fore and aft, doesn't do much.

The platform is useful for when you're not clipped in. Like, getting back on the bike on a steep incline, and needing a few pedals before getting the other side clipped in. Or, if you need to dab in a technical section, being able to pedal through the rest before getting stable enough to clip in. Otherwise, the float that's built in to any clipless pedal literally wouldn't work.
I always feel the support from the platform (Funn Ripper) and don’t have problem with the float or releasing my foot when needed, but it depends on how high are your pins.

I’ve also had great luck with their flats. I’ll for sure be getting a set of their clips.

It’s going to have to wait till I’m closer to riding season. At the rate $$$ is flying out the window with our kitchen remodel, if I buy anything unnecessary right now, I’m getting a serious punch right in the dick from my wife…

haha I hear that... I tried to explain the difference between "wanting" a bathroom remodel and "needing" new bike parts to my wife, but she doesn't seem to get it.

I've always been pretty much a believer in all or nothing with pedals - flats, or old school clipless with no cage/platform. But I am curious, might try these.

I have been running the same XTR pedals but they bearings wear really fast. I take them apart each winter, clean and grease them. but if I get two seasons out of them, I am lucky.
I've experienced the "common" seal popping out on one set, which I rebuilt not long ago. I added a bunch of o-rings on the spindle, which help keep the seal in place. My other set has been going for nearly a season and no seal popping. So far, no complaints.

Yeah old SPD’er here. Probably close to 30 years riding shimano clipless w/ Sidi shoes. Two years ago I got my Ripley and switched to flats (Kona Wah Wah’s) and love them. Took a little getting used too but really like being able to shift my foot around on the pedal platform and the feeling of a larger platform under my sole. Sidis are now in the closet. Watch out for the pins tho……..

I’ve always used Speedplay Frogs and with Wahoo no longer supporting the cleats I need to find a new pedal. What do you think about clipless pedals with a platform? It seems like the platform would make the pedal fiddly getting into.
Personally, I've never found any clip pedals "fiddly" to get into. I've used just about every type. From the flat pedal looking DH ones to the minimal Eggbeaters. The way you have your cleats adjusted can have a lot to do with how the shoe interfaces with the pedal. Some shoes have some really deep lugs and the cleat can be buried deep in the sole. That can usually be remedied with some cleat spacers. As the sole wears, you can remove the shims.

I don't really liked the platformed clip pedals. Never really found the platform to be of any real use...including in the "O Snap" moments.

Currently using the HT T1 and XTR m9100 on my bikes. Both work great with zero issues. I did take the pins out of the T1. I like free float and didn't like the shoes catching on them. I also have two different pairs of shoes. One carbon soled XC and the other, a more traditional rubber soled trail shoes. I've switched between the shoes and pedals and have no issues getting in or out of them. The clip system does feel a bit different switching back and forth.

I did the same with the 0-rings based on an older post, maybe from you. It helps but the seal still does not stay all of the way in on the older design. I did purchase a new set of XTRs last year but did not ride much. Hopefully, Shimano's newer design address this issue.

I went from Mallets platform > XT 8100 clipless > XT 8120 clipless with platform. The 8120 are my favorite. The platforms on the 8120 are not large where they get in the way when clipping in, but large enough of a surface area to feel more support on a bigger drop.

Crankbrothers Mallet E. I was a flat pedal rider and wanted the same feel. Tired many different pedals and the Mallet-Es were exactly what I was after. Easy in/out but with a good platform you can actually feel. I do run them with Crankbrothers shoes also however.
I have a set of Mallet E's as well. They work great with my old-skool Bontrager RL mountain shoes, nylon sole and all.

I've ridden them all and HT's mechanism is the best by a lot. Their T series are the thinnest out there and I get more platform contact even on stiff shoes compared to Shimano. It's a bummer One Up went with SPD imo.
