Hello,

I'm looking at building up a Mojo 3 and wanted peoples advice on if the carbon wheelsets Ibis offers are worth the price difference.

Just for reference I'm 6'1 200lbs and ride midwest singletrack and consider myself an average rider. I like technical trails just as much as I like fast and flowy trails.

I'm interested in the GX build and looking at running 2.6 Minions.

There are 2 version of the ibis Carbon wheelset. For you riding weight you should go with the 1300 for the thicker spokes. I have 3 of the Ibis 742 carbon wheel sets custom built and it works out fine for me at 190 lbs riding weight. I don’t do jumps, sometimes with rocky and rooty just trails, most of the time is loose leaves.

No I have not try the ibis alloy wheelset but have used alloy wheelset before on 26” and 27.5” bikes. I just prefer the carbon rims and want to keep the rolling weight as low as I can even with the Maxxis Minion DHF/DHR2 tires. Currently running the reckons+ on 2 bikes, minion DHF/rekon 2.6” on the Bronson and rocket Ron’s on the anthem advanced.

Personally, knowing the bike and knowing that you want to run 2.6s, I think it is worth considering. I feel it almost completely counters any of the sluggish/vague complaints that people sometimes have when you start to get toward the + end of the spectrum. The stiffness and acceleration are noticeably different than alloy.

Whether or not those differences are worth the additional cost to you could only be answered by demoing the bike with both wheelsets.

I just had a mojo 3 built up the other week from a certain online dealer that doesn't charge tax in my state (there are no local ibis dealers near me within an hours drive). Anyways I was able to get the nx build with an xo1 shifter, gx casette, magura mt trail brakes, carbon bar and 742 logo carbon wheelset with 2.6 dhf and recons for $4900 shipped. This is the 2018 model with the evol fox 34 fork. If I were you i would see if you can. Work out a deal with your LBS or call your online retailer to see what they can do for you. In my opinion the gx build is not worth the $700 increase I'm asking price when you can get the nx and replace the drive train for less than that $700 difference and upgrade to carbon for less
