Hey all,

My son is a little over two years old and has been dominating his balance bike for a while now (Banana Bikes GT-great bike for the money). He's got plenty of room to grow on it, but like any Dad, i'm itching to get him pedaling so we can go further. He's 35" tall with around a 13" inseam, this puts him on to only the smallest pedal bikes. In my researching, i've been browsing some of the 12/14" BMX bikes (Kink Roadster/Pump, Cult Juvenile, FitBikeCo), and was curious if anyone else has gone this route vs some of the more traditional (or MTB oriented) offerings. We have a pump track (paved and dirt versions) somewhat locally that we've hit on the balance bike, but other than that, no skateparks or anything "BMX" oriented. I plan on riding single track with him as he grows, but i think in these early years he won't be doing much that couldn't be done on any decent pedal bike. Beyond that, i'm thinking that since most of his time spent riding is around the house/neighborhood, a BMX type could be a lot of fun. we already build jumps/teeter totters for him in the driveway for his balance bike. The one place i'm confused though is sizing. I see most of the 12" bmx bike are sized for someone 28-36", but have a seat height of 15-16". Is the expectation that they learn to not need there feet on the ground when sitting? Curious if anyone else has gone this route and what you're thoughts are. In the end I might just wait till next spring since living in michigan means he won't be riding outside in winter and he'll likely be tall enough to go up a size in the spring. Thanks in advance!

Also, i should mention, as much as i'd love to spend big $$$ on a bike, we just don't have the budget. I'm looking to keep it at $250 or under (we do have a 6 month old that will inherit it next and likely more kids on the way)

We did. Cult makes a fantastic 12" BMX bike. For a kid learning to pedal our experience was the Spawn 14" was much better. It is still "BMX" and it has mtb'ish tires for some light off road riding. If your kid can already ride well the Cult is fantastic. Learning on a little BMX is a little more difficult. They won't have any issue with their feet on the ground, but learning to pedal and not be able to sit at all may prove frustrating at first. The pedals are inches from the ground so if they turn and their pedal is down it ill throw them. It just isn't very forgiving for learning to pedal IMHO.

FYI, also take a look at the Fit Misfit -- weight is very similar to the Cult Juvenile and it's a little cheaper ($300 vs. $330 retail).

Also note that sourcebmx.com tends to send emails with 10% off coupons if you sign up for an account and leave things in your cart overnight.

What these guys said. Get a Spawn Yoji 14". Its a very small little bike, much smaller than the 16". You can take the cranks off if you want to run it as a strider bike for a bit I guess too. Definitely stick with the BMX/DJ track as well as the MTB track if you can, especially while they are young. They just pick up so many skills easier on the little bikes.

I got my son a random cheapo 12" (or was it 14???) pedal bike from the classifieds for $30 at that stage. It was perfectly fine to get him pedalling until he grew into a 16" which happened very quickly by the way.

My 2 cents is save up for his NEXT size when the weight and quality will actually matter more for developing a skill set.
