I was checking amazon, ebay and I couldn't find rear view mirrors which would I use on my mtb.

So I was brainstorming little and I sad to my self, let's do some testing.

I bought 2 blind spot mirrors and had some fun with it and got this. Gonna test this tomorrow, I will see how it goes.

What kinda mirrors you use if you do? Maybe I get nice idea from you guys.

I hate mirrors. But few days ago electric scooter crashed in to me. I was fine, but chick on the scooter(copassenger) got my front wheel in to her body. Driver of that scooter was fine as well. THey come fast and silent while I was driving to my destination - woods. I got like 2 miles of bicycling to the woods.

I tried a few of these. Giant waste of time and dangerous. Learn how to look behind you without swerving on the road. If you are about to get hit, seeing it in the mirror is too late.

You don't have the luxury of looking behind you on a trail.

My guess is that your body will block too much of the view backwards to be of much use, you won't see anyone until they are right up on you. But you've already tested it out?

I use to use a mirror that velcro'ed to the drop bar on a road bike, though I can't remember how I positioned it where it wouldn't be in the way, that was a long time ago. I've got a mirror that attaches to either your helmet or glasses, I can't remember which, but I have never used it. I thought about trying it sometime if I start commuting so I could see what is going on with traffic. I don't think it would work on the trails, though.

Not yet on the road. Only at home when I was putting this together. My legs and body and arms doesn't block the view. It actually uses free space which is around those body parts. My bar is 780mm

It's actually this, I drill some holes and use same plastic thingies to mount it on my bike. I will see how it will look tomorrow. Well, actually today. it's 5am my time.

The future is a Google Glass type tiny screen embedded into your sunglasses, displaying the view from a video camera facing backward.

Garmin already has a radar unit you can mount on your bars that will alert you if a vehicle is approaching and tell you how close it is. That could be used to keep the screen dimmed until a car is detected, then turn it on when a vehicle approaches.

I use a mirror on the bars so I can check out my bad self.

I do use a Take-a-look mirror on the road bike. I have used it on a few occasions mtbing leading slower riders to help to keep track of them. On the road, it helps me hammer as I can slot in and out of traffic as needed to avoid obstacles and issues on the side of the road without breaking my rhythm.

Not a fan of bar-mounted mirrors. where they point depends too heavily on the orientation of the bars. prefer a mirror be mounted to my helmet or glasses. if it's removable, you can take it off when you get to the trails.

when I'm on my mtb, though, I avoid riding in the street with traffic when I can. my mtb is substantially slower than my road bike so traffic interactions happen faster and more frequently. no thanks.

I had bar end mirrors on my recumbent trike while I was recovering from surgery. I found them buzzy, but that's more the trike's fault. They also stuck out which made them really irritating when parking the trike or loading it in a truck. They were low and far away from front and center to look at. Mirrors that mounted on stalks from inboard of the controls - like on any motorcycle - would have been a lot better.

Yep, and better yet give you a few seconds of complete and sheer terror right as a Mountain Lion is in full pounce mode then death. Better just to let it happen and die with a little less terror prior. Or it could act as a blinding moment from the sun before it happens. I'm on the fence with running mirrors or not while mountain biking.

So to clarify this a little. :)

My right eye is kinda screwed. I see fog on it and I depend basically on my left eye. That's why I also find interesting idea about rear view camera.

So back to the topic. Tested today those little mirror and I was quite surprised how they work. I can see my knees when pedaling but I also see a lot of action going on on my left side and right side.

But on bad side I can't see right behind me what is happening. First impression is kinda weird to need to look down to check what is happening behind you on your left or right side, but I could get used to it.

For the ones suggestion turning your head, try turning your head on right side with right eye closed and you will be on the same spot like I am :)

Schulze suggested some idea, but to be honest I am middle age man and I am afraid I would look like alien with this kinda solution. And I would like to get laid in the future... -.-
If I would wear solution like that in my country, I can guarantee I can sign up for monk in monastery. So no thank you, I would like to have some fun in the future :D

Either way I am very gratefull for all of your ideas, even for yours Schulze.

To bad you don't like to post pictures, so from time to time I need to use my imagination what you guys are using. To be honest I wouldn't mind alien looking glasses on chick like Schulze has in his avatar...

Considering how many things have been broken off of my handlebars, all I see is 14 years of bad luck waiting to happen.

Nat I was just joking :D You made me laugh and that's a positive thing. I know you guys are trying to help other members and I am also thank full for that.

I am seriously considering rear view camera with small monitor like on that Diy link which I linked. Not the video, but the link with a road bike. I was wondering how to fix that sun doesn't go in to monitor so you can see the picture. I am still brainstorming. That's why I opened this thread so I get some good ideas.

I also know setups like that seems crazy to some, but we all are different and we have different needs. When I was younger I wouldn't put mirrors or anything on my bike. No way :D To be honest even those little ones are ugly to me

But this days I notice I do need some solution cause I had a little crash, and I had few close calls from bikers which were passing by me very fast and very close. I assume they are younger, cause that was the way I rode when I was younger.

You are seriously considering a rear view camera on a mountain bike. I thought this was all a joke. I think it’s a bad idea just for the distraction alone. While mountain biking one needs all senses zoned in on the trail ahead, not behind.

2¢ worth.

you are assuming I am riding trails. I will try to explain this easy way on my broken english. I ride where I feel I wanna ride that day. So if I feel I wanna visit my old folks and drink coffee at their place I will do that. I will not buy another bike just for that.
The next day I may wanna ride in the woods. I still have plenty of roads until I get to the woods.
The next day maybe I wanna go to my friend.
The next day maybe I just wanna do fast few laps around.

I get a feeling you guys in states buy bunch of bikes and each one is for something different. I have one bike and I use it for my needs. I wonder if they sell special bike just for going to the store?

I also have a need to know what is behind me. I understand you guys don't have that need. But I do not understand how some of you guys, don't understand that there are people which do have that need.

I hope I was clear enough in my broken english :)

I apologize, I was picturing you riding dirt single track trails like we ride in the states. If you feel you need a rear view camera then by all means go for it.

np man. I have a little ''issues'' with my english. I do try to do my best. I even use translator sometimes. :D

my city is kinda specific. You can ride on the road and in few minutes you are in the woods and you are riding up to the mountain, and 20 minutes later you again on some road, or something similar. That's why I posted picture. So you guys can get a better sense. Camera is not a must, I am just looking for a discrete solution how to know what is behind me. Don't wanna wear something weird on my head. :)
