Best $1000 Hardtail?

My brother is looking to get into riding and he's got $1000 Cdn ($900 US) to spend on a hardtail. I'm gonna be pushing him to get into dirt jumping and I want it to be a bike I can steal sometimes for assorted freeriding when I want a break from a full squish but realistically it's probably gonna be used for riding casually around town (ie. to work) quite a bit and also for XC trail riding occasionally.

I've been pushing him to get a Specialized P2 Cr-Mo because Cr-Mo bikes are so cool but why don't they make a Cr-Mo P3? I realize it's out of his price range but what's wrong with Cr-Mo that they won't use it for their top of the line bike? I though Cr-Mo is the more 'legit' material to make a HT from due to it's feel. Many of the top HTs (ie: Blk Market Mob) are Cr-Mo.

Anyways, he's gonna wanna buy from a brand like Specialized, Norco (BigFoot?) or Kona (Scrap?) that offers a lot of good components for the buck. What do you guys think is a good choice?

Get a Nemesis. Next question.
Amazing bike but I think you missed the $1000 part. That bikes looks about $3g. It's his first real bike so he's not gonna drop $5g like I did.

I'm really looking for a bike that has a good frame (ie. quality, short chainstays etc) and a decent fork and then everything else he can upgrade as he needs to.

No where near $3000. You could get one built for around 1400 if you knew what you were doing.

Hmm....it's nice to have such a flurry of responses but some serious suggestions that cost around a grand would be more helpful than just the nicest or wildest HT you've seen.
Brodie has a some nice hardtails in that price range in their Hardass series. The also have some nice DJ bikes in their Rat series but those wouldn't be very trail ridable.

Well it's his first bike and he's not gonna feel like hunting out deals on every part and building it himself. $1400 seems pretty ideal case scenario to me....Maybe if you bought a bunch of used parts for it. The Fox fork, thomson post, X9 stuff and the e13 alone probably add up close to $1400 if you paid full retail.

I heard Blk Mrkt is coming out with another version of the Mob called something else and built offshore for a lot less. Any idea what that goes for?

Ive just got my first gen Imperial resprayed for a new build and i tell you ive riden many ht(P3/Morhine/Sinsiter Ridgee.. ect)and i tell you the evil i was the most comftorble on,If you want to climb then dont buy a imperial but if you want to do stuff that you have never done before get it,When i first rode my evil i started doing stuff i never could like doing manuals and then doing jumps ive allways been unsure about doing and when i ddidi the biek just felt ooo so smooth dident feel like a ht its that smooth,Any one who has aone will tell you the same unless there not a fan of the super laid back seat tube.

If you want to do more climbing too i seriously consider you look into s Sininster Ridge as its the best biek what a a mix of FR and XC but will handle anything and climb as good as it fly DH.

Off of Nemesis' Site:

TerrorBox frame SPY pic's!!!
I mentioned that I have been working on a side project , this side project also has a name TerrorBox.
Here are a few SPY of the frame I have been working on for them .
It will be called the K4H short for Killer for Hire .. kinda the theme here .
The perfect street and woods style bike to flat out KILL it on ! We all thought the name fit very well .
Some of the features on the frame include... Internal headset , Spanish B/B and a new adjustable dropout system with sliding disk tab that doesn't suck !

oh and that Blk Mrkt frame you were talking about is called the Riot. Look at matchvideozine's site for more pictures on that.
