I've tried it...its not strong enough and will depress/buldge into the spoke holes. Its more of a stretchy elastic tape when compared to other strapping tapes such as kapton.

 

I tried it once and it was a disaster.

 

Not sure about the clear...but the regular Gorilla tape is on the thick side. If you have an already tight fitting tire...it'll make it near impossible to remove.

 

You need the rim strip to cover the big holes in the rim. I can't imagine how that could wear out. The tape over the top will work best if it goes all the way to the sides and up the sidewall a little. Then it will be very difficult for air to get around the tape. Also check wear the tape overlaps to see if it is sealed well.

 

I put Stan's conversion on my backup bike 3 years ago (includes rim strip) and have changed tires once so far. Rim strips were in decent shape so I just cleaned them and re-used.

I never tried the clear Gorilla tape but a buddy has used it for a 26" and 29" ghetto setup (non-tubeless rims) without issues. Both have held through many rides in a New England winter. In fact, he is pretty proud of how well it's worked for him. I don't think he has any rim strips...just tape.

 

Just in areas to avoid cable rub.

Yep. It's thick and sticky. Just stretchable enough to form solid contact to rim without wrinkles. Never had any trouble. I use satin polyester ribbon as a rim strip. Any color you want. Make the ribbon just slightly wider than the cutouts for maximum tape to rim contact.
